U-17’s Eliminated by Germany

Germany is a killer for the United States in knockout roudns of World Cups. Sure, this does not compare at all to 2002, but its a decent way to start a post.
The USA lost 2-1, the 1 being another Mykell Bates goal, to the Germans this morning. All in all you could say [...]

U-17’s Do the Impossible, Advance

They did it. Who knows how, but they did.
Now come on down and see what you have won….
…A shiney new knockout round game against Germany! (ooh aaaaah)
Some prize right?
Deffinatley going to be a tough fixture, but they put themselves in this place (and they know it) and now it is time to [...]

U-17’s Luck Out Big Time, Chance to Advance

Don’t ask me how, but apparently, all of the events that needed to happen for the American U-17’s to have any chance of advancing out of the group stage have happenned, and now all they need to do is defeat Belgium to advance.
This is just the most ridiculous scenario to break free from elimination that [...]

Gulati and Bradley Meet With Fabio Capello

During the USMNT’s recent trip to Europe for the friendly with Sweden, USSF president Sunil Gulati and head coach Bob Bradley met with former Real Madrid coach Fabio Capello in London to discuss “international and American soccer”.
About a month ago the rumor was flying about Capello “being in talks” for a job in the states. [...]

USA vs Sweden Recap

Blah.
That’s what that was.
No one looked great.
In my pre-match briefing, the three guys I talked about were Clint, Landy, and Bob Bradley.
I said Clint needed to really step up and show that fire and flair that would blind you if you were anywhere in the country of Germany last summer. I didn’t really [...]

Pre-Match Briefing

Some thoughts the night before the Sweden friendly…
- Once again, it must be said that it is about time the USA headed to Europe to play a friendly against a quality opponent.
- Not to say expect a stinker, but Landy Cake’s head will probably be back home with the floundering Gals and how he is [...]

American U-17’s Stunned by Tajikistan

In what cannot be considered an ideal start, the American U-17’s lost early this morning to Tajikistan in their first group game of the U-17 World Cup in Korea.
The fact that I cannot even find Tajkistan on the map (although that may be in part to the fact that my map does have the U.S.S.R. [...]

Making Impressive Progress

As I looked over the roster for the upcomming friendly with Sweden one thing really stood out.
The clubs our Americans are playing at have become an unmeasurable amount better in a very short time.
I know that may seem obvious but it is truly quite remarkable the increasing quality the Yanks abroad are now [...]

Podcast: World Cup 2010 Group B Preview. "You hear that, Mr. Anderson?"

March 19th, 2010 | By: Daryl | Comments Comments(5)

World Cup previews. They can be a bit dull and not particularly helfpul when it comes to predicting who will qualify from each group. One reason for this is that they focus too much on things like players and not enough on the really good things. Like quality of national [read more]

FIFA Has $1 Billion in Reserve Funds, But Still Doesn't Appreciate Clever Advertising

March 19th, 2010 | By: Daryl | Comments Comments(6)

Two bits of news today. Read them both, and then decide for yourself whether the two are related.

The first story is that FIFA made a profit of $196 million in 2009, and now has a reserve cash fund of more than $1 billion. One billion dollars in the vault. Which makes FIFA sound a little like a Bond villain.

The second story is that FIFA have come down hard on South African budget airline kulula.com for what FIFA calls "ambush marketing". Basically, Kulula isn't an official World Cup sponsor, and as such is not allowed to suggest otherwise. Which makes perfect sense. However, Kulula - famous for its slightly left-field advertising campaigns - recently ran an ad in the South African Sunday Times newspaper on February 28th stating the airline was the "Unofficial National Carrier of the You-Know-What". [read more]

The World Cup 2010 DJ Playlist (Musical Lineup)

March 18th, 2010 | By: chris | Comments Comments(4)

(That kid immediately gets some sort of WCB Order of Merit.)

There's going to be a rather large party in South Africa this year. Some call it the World Cup.

But before there can be the real party, there must be another party beforehand. Because it's not really a party unless it's sandwiched by eight other parties of no importance whatsoever. And judging by the musical lineup for the World Cup pre-party, this will be no different. [read more]

FIFA World Cup 2026: Colombia!

March 18th, 2010 | By: chris | Comments Comments(16)

There are many things which FIFA isn't very good at. One of them is putting anyone in the organization in front of a microphone, or allowing spilled words onto a page into the hands of the media. Another is running the world's football organization.

So FIFA, after handing this year's World Cup to the country with the second highest per capita murder rate, are looking to outdo themselves by sponsoring a World Cup bid by the world's most dangerous country, Colombia. Hip hip. [read more]
