Stay classy, Mexico

Well, Mexico won 2-1 yesterday and the image above pretty much sums up entire match. Gerardo Torrado strangles Benny Feilhaber right in front of the referee and only gets a yellow card for what amounts to criminal assault.
Yahoo! Sports’ Martin Rogers wrote a brilliant column in the aftermath of that rage-inducing match that really hits every point. Says Rogers:
[Roberto] Moreno, an official from Panama, delivered the worst refereeing display I’ve seen in the last decade. Some of his decisions bordered on the farcical, with the Americans drawing four yellow cards to Mexico’s one.
[...]
Already with the advantage of playing at altitude, the Mexicans can schedule games in the afternoon heat of a summer day and their fans can behave like animals without fear of sanction. Throw in a terrible referee and it becomes almost impossible to beat Mexico on home soil.
But this loss can’t be completely attributed to Mexico and the awful refereeing. Bob Bradley once again did his part to hinder the US MNT, too — this time by starting Brian Ching over Jozy Altidore, sticking with an ineffectual midfield for far too long, and once again failing to prepare his side for the challenge at hand.
We’ve said it before and we’ll say it again: Bob Bradley needs to be fired. He is not fit to manage the US men’s national team. The Confederations Cup proved that he has talent at his disposal and that his continued mishandling of it is both a travesty and insulting. Of course, the bigger problem is that Sunil Gulati, a man who also needs to be ousted, doesn’t understand this.

Dustin your a blow hard — where is the great analysis you promised you could do; instead all you do is whine whine whine.

That’s correct, Dustin. I obviously don’t care about getting stuff right. Excellent rebuttal to my last comment.

I’m not a blow hard, I posted that less than an Hour ago. Can I have some time? You want a deadline as to when I’ll complete it?

And Mike, yes you are quite slow enough, you certainly demonstrated that. Mexico should have had at least two red cards for laying their hands on and pushing and chocking when the play was stopped. If it was such a fair job by the refs, i don’t understand why Mexico could be so brazen.

Mark, I guess some disgruntled fans will never learn. But fuck it. Torrado and Nery out. gooch out. Boca out. Feilhaber out. Ok? Fair enough? If that is what you call fair in a game, the knife cuts both ways. the US DESERVED reds just as much as the Mexican team… or more so, since their inability to stop the incisive runs by Gio and Co. could only be dealt with by brazen fouls. So, if the ref would have been a complete nazi and laid down the law with all its might, the US would still have been the losing side. So swallow the loss whole. Yesterday Mexico earned their win. The ref could have thrown the game, but didn’t. In the end, if he would have, the US would have suffered the biggest blow and you would be on this site cursing his name and his stupidity for showing the US 3 cards and Mexico only 2. How about we skip the excuses and just admit the facts. Mexico 2. US 1.

Okay Mike. Admit the facts: US going to the World Cup. Mexico probably not.

4 games left. Check out the following back and forth between Noah Davis and Greg Lalas.
It might not be all smooth sailing for the US after all.

Mike your right, I’m not usually that harsh. I would be happy if US and Mexico make the world cup – I really hope so. cheers, Congratulations to Mexico on the win and Good Night.

CONCACAF is a joke.
USA and Mexico are always gonna go to the World Cup because FIFA says so.
Mexico played some football, USA, well…9 players in 1/4 of the pitch 10 minutes into the game.
That’s not football. Never was, never will.
The referee was terrible. But that excuse is not valid when you play like USA. Anti-football we call it down in South America.

You guys need to chill, man…

@mike: I’m really not one to keep going back and forth but calling me an idiot, moronic and obtuse when I stated the obvious is ridiculous…let me copy and paste your original statement so you can read it again yourself.
“And if the ref had been pro-Mexico, this whole conversation would not even be happening as the US benefited heftily from his unwillingness to make a ballsy call and DO THE RIGHT THING, although to the detriment of the game, which would have been 1)second yellow to Gooch for repeated fouls to stop the flow of the game, 2)second yellow to Bocanegra for that studs up slide tackle on Gio, and 3)Red to BOTH Torrado and Feilhaber.”
You’re stating that “THE RIGHT THING TO DO” was to throw 4 players out of a game that was obviously a pretty clean game with very few, if any, dirty tackles.
A referee does not hand out red cards for multiple fouls…that’s what yellow cards are for…a referee does not hand out red cards for a little quarrel where players are protecting their teammates…once again that’s what yellow cards are for.
That is all I’m saying, so quit acting like a pimple popping middle schooler and calling people names because they call you out on obviously ridiculous statements.

GS,
Ok, sorry for the petulant calling of names. It was uncalled for.
But I want to clarify what I was saying above. I was listing those incidences as EXAMPLES that occurred during that game that could have merited an expulsion. To “do the right thing” I am referring to if the ref had acted upon any, not ALL, of those incidences, he would not have been overstepping his authority. IF the ref were to have given a second yellow, for example, to Bocanegra, it would not been a dubious call as it was a foul that warranted a second call. And I know refs don’t hand out reds for every foul. But in soccer, as you seem to have forgotten, when a player gets a second yellow, he is then shown a red card as two yellows equal a red. Remember?
And I realize that the tussle didn’t require a red, as many pundits and US fans have called for. Which is why I said, and I quote “So, if the ref would have been a complete nazi and laid down the law with all its might…”, drawing a reference to referees that respond to these outbursts with overly disciplinarian actions. Should he have shown a red card? No. Could he have? Yes, if he would have judged the incidence with too much harshness. But both players, on either side, would have been ejected.
When Rogers says that he is the worst ref he has seen, well, frankly it must be either his first clasico or simply has no idea about soccer, making it impossible for him to be unable to justifiably make that statement. It was not a pro-Mexico referee performance, as it also was not an anti-US performance. All in all it was a clean game. The ref was as fair as you can be at a game under those conditions, and he showed an obvious aversion to making any calls that would be too strict. He preferred to let the game play on.
And for those who will bring up the offside call, they must realize the ref depends on his linesman for that call.
It was a don’t rock the boat performance. And neither team was the better for it.

Oh, and a ref will hand out a yellow for multiple fouls. But once again, IF you are already carrying a yellow, you will then be shown a red.

I think what pisses US fans off is the incessant hands to the face by the Mexican team when there was stoppage of play. That is a no, no and Refs should give a red card to end it once and for all. I’m not saying they should’ve during the Mex/USA game, but FIFA needs to send out a warning to all federations that hands to the neck or face in any aggressive nature during stoppage of play is an automatic red card. Sionara, goodbye!
As for game time fouls, I think the US commited a few more ‘aggressive’ fouls than the Mexicans in this game. I have seen other games, namely the 2002 world cup game, where the Mexicans commited fouls after they knew they were going to lose that made them look very, very bad and where 3 or 4 players should’ve been sent off for good.
I root for the Mexican team to qualify b.c if they don’t it doesn’t represent our region well. I would hope our counterparts wish the US the same.

Mike, just stop. I completely ceased reading your nether comments because there just so vapid. Just unite around the team and aim to discuss what our future has in store. What we need to do to move on from this.
When we attacked, we played well. Its always going to be tough to be on the attack in the Azteca, but at least we showed than when we DO possess, solid football ensues. Truthwise, Bradley needs to go. Period. Done talk.
He’s calling up all of the wrong players (Pearce? c’mon…) Nothing pains me more than to see a coach who is willing to take risks on young players, but then goes the withershins route and calls-up undeserving players. Positive from the match was of course that Holden has proved, albeit for only 10 minutes of play, that he is quality. If all stays to path, we’ve found ourselves with some real talent. US youth is busting at the seams with talent. Look for an impressive showing this September in Egypt. If we could only now get a new tactician, all would be right in the world…
And finally, Mexico and the US will both be at the World Cup. I’m not even going to commence reading any sort of theories on this topic. They’ll both be there – indubitably.

^ To clarify, when I said “Mike your right”, i was referring to the fact that the outcome is still uncertain about who will go to the World Cup. Actually I hope all four of the current top teams make it, including whoever will have to play the CONCACAF(4th)-CONMEBOL(5th) playoff.
(? hope i have the qualifying right).

Uncle Sam is such a cry baby!!! Waa Waa!!! The Mexican player hit me, help me Ref!!!! WAAAA!

GIO flopped the entire game… If he won an oscar for it, C. Ronaldo would only get a daytime emmy… that dude did even GET TOUCHED on Bocanegras yellow OR on DeMerit’s tackle. that dude is a lil punk I hope someone breaks his legs

Well apparently I am a total Blow Hard, because I can’t provide any analysis for the reffing, because I can’t find this game anywhere online. So yeah you guys can ignore me from now on.

Martin Rogers is a hack. He doesn’t know squat. He says nothing about the tactics and basically blames the whole games loss on the ref and crowd which I can’t agree with(granted the ref was bad). He also gets his facts wrong cause Mexico got 2 yellows. One for Gio and one for Torrado. It was less than 80 degrees so that crap can’t be used as an excuse. He also states that Mexico only had to deal with some chilly weather in the winter in Columbus when they played there which is so hypocritical. I can’t believe he is supposed to be some kind of expert and they let him write the garbage he does.
The worst offender in this match was Nery Castillo. If he didn’t come on the above image would not have taken place. Nery tries to force a USA player up and Benny rushes him. Benny was just protecting his teammate and Torrado did the same. And he did not strangle him. He put his hand on his kneck but pushes him. Both Benny and Torrado could have been ejected.
Afterword Tim Howard and Carlos Vela try to settle everyone down. If Nery didn’t come in, this game would have went on without incident. I find this stay classy thing offensive and unfair.

Everyone who is calling US fans whiners, I will tell ya this much; if someone Fed around with my teammate while he was on the ground like the mexican player did, instead of charging them and ‘lightly’ pushing the mexican players aside, I would’ve made damn sure someone on the mexican side in that little scrum would be going down…I would’ve swung and nailed someone in the face, also making damn sure that whoever I cracked would get red carded with me (atleast try after the fact if I could keep my head) so as not to punish my side.
I have seen euro games, but the craziest atmosphere I have ever seen live at a stadium was at the Bombonera in Buenos Aires. Boca vs River in the quarterfinals of La Copa de Libertadores… That game was intense during stoppage of play, not during actual play, but the stoppage time had a lot of bs, fake, skirmishes…
This game made that game look like childs play. Every stoppage of play mexican players were running up with hands to the face if the US player was standing (gooch, etc.) or on the ground (Davies). I say again that FIFA needs to send the warning now that any aggressive hands to the face or neck area during stoppage of play needs to be penalized with a red card or you will have games get out of hand.
On another note, Davies scored two goals this weekend for Sochaux…can’t find it on youtube yet…the guy is going to be very good.
GLTTMNT

All usa fans are a bunch of whiners. We beat you TWICE in 17 days. 7-1 combined. HAHAHA!! Mexico owns the usa. Always

^Unbelievable, US tried getting tuff once in these games once, but it didn’t go so well.

I think FIFA need to do more than step in and stop the hands to the face. UEFA has taken action in Europe when fans get out of control and endanger the players and other fans. Why won’t this region do the same. If Mexico can’t control their fans and players than CONCACAF should. Start banning fans from the games and start punishing Mexico’s FA.
