Thursday night news nuggets: WCQ roster edition

Bob Bradley has announced his 24-man roster for the two upcoming World Cup Qualifiers against El Salvador and Trinidad & Tobago. Here it is:

GOALKEEPERS (2): Brad Guzan (Aston Villa: 5/3 SO), Tim Howard (Everton FC: 12/7 SO)

DEFENDERS (8): Carlos Bocanegra (Rennes: 22/3), Jonathan Bornstein (Chivas USA, 2/0), Steve Cherundolo (Hannover: 19/0), Jay DeMerit (Watford: 3/0), Clarence Goodson (IK Start: 1/0), Chad Marshall (Columbus Crew: 2/0), Oguchi Onyewu (AC Milan: 17/1), Jonathan Spector (West Ham: 2/0)

MIDFIELDERS (8): Kyle Beckerman (Real Salt Lake: 0/0), Michael Bradley (Borussia Mönchengladbach: 11/4), Ricardo Clark (Houston Dynamo: 6/0), Clint Dempsey (Fulham: 18/4), Benny Feilhaber (AGF Aarhus: 2/0), Stuart Holden (Houston Dynamo: 1/0), Robbie Rogers (Columbus Crew: 0/0), José Francisco Torres (Pachuca: 5/0)

FORWARDS (6): Jozy Altidore (Hull City: 9/5), Conor Casey (Colorado Rapids: 5/0), Brian Ching (Houston Dynamo: 16/6), Charlie Davies (FC Sochaux: 3/2), Landon Donovan (Los Angeles Galaxy: 31/11), Robbie Findley (Real Salt Lake: 0/0)
*numbers indicate all-time World Cup Qualifying caps/goals

The new additions are Kyle Beckerman and Robbie Findley, but aside from that it’s business as usual. With Davies and Altidore finding their club form in Europe, I’m really curious to see how they pair up in these matches. [US Soccer]

A couple other items of note:

-Video of Jozy’s first goal for Hull City: [Unprofessional Foul]

-Charlie Renken is off to Hoffenheim. Not sure if Germany is the place for him. [Tribal Football]

Why does this guy keep on calling Conor Casey and brian Ching!!!Also Bornstein gosh!!!Their are better players then them.I have the feeling that this guy will not call up Jones and castillo when they are cleared by Fifa to play.

Brooks I’m not sure I agree on Renken and Gyau. I have read a lot of really positive things about Hoffenheim’s ability to groom players. I don’t like seeing them leave our residency program but if they are leaving to become better players then I’m all for it. Also, Gyau has spent a whole lot of time out of the US playing soccer so he’s not new to it and I think him going with Renken is about as good as it can get as I’m sure they will do better being together.

Simply put, I don’t agree with people who think that the US can develop a player as well as European programs can and getting into European soccer early and succeeding makes the player much more attractive to European teams as opposed to going through our High School, College, USL MLS etc. ranks.

Why don’t they ever call Brad Friedel? Isn’t he the starter over at Aston Villa?

GS: Oh, I’m not saying they should stay in the US at all. I’m just questioning whether Germany is the right European country for Renken’s game.

brooks, i would rather them go to hoffenheim than go to bigger clubs like benfica and villareal. plus, germany is much better at developing fundamentals, which is something that seems to be lacking in our youth as they develop.

This is a little random … but why was Bob Bradley at the Galaxy vs. Chivas USA game?

Why hasn’t Frankie Simek been picked in like 2 years? This kid grew up in the Arsenal system and is a regular for Sheff Wed and he’s not better than Bornstein or even DeMerit? Bob keeps picking hard workers, which is great, but the team needs some ball possession and some finesse. Kicking it up to Davies or Jozy isn’t going to work in the World Cup next year. We need a team of possession. Simek on the right, Spector on the left, and Gooch and Boca in the middle gives us a tough defense that can setup the counterattack very well. Plus all those guys aren’t afraid to possess the ball in the back where as someone like DeMerit just kicks the ball out without purpose (I do like his work ethic but he turns the ball over too much like that when he has time to make a simple pass).

Beasley would actually be effective if he had players in the middle like Feilhaber, Holden, Torres, or Edu who could actually possess the ball in tight space instead of just kicking it up and hoping a forward gets it. This stupid counterattack style might work every now and then, but if we see Spain or Brazil again in the WC when it matters, they are going to destroy us. Let the flashy kids play Bob!!!

manUTDfan, simek had a long injury for the past year or so (meaning he obviously wasnt a regular for wednesday), which is a huge reason why he hasn’t gotten a call up. also, even with a 100% healthy simek, dolo and spector are both much better fullbacks.

I love the USMNT, but I really dread watching the style of play from Bradley’s teams. This tactic of kick the ball as far down the field as possible and hope Davies or Altidore can put it in, then hunker down in defense, is awful. I would love it if we could get a coach that knows tactics and how to play tactically. Just once I would like to see us score by building up the attack through possession. Sadly I do not think that Bob understands this.

Great to see the stock of our players rising in Europe. I hope that the move to Beleneses is just what Freddy needs to break out.

NOVA: Ching is called up because he’s our best target striker, and Casey is called up because he’s the second best. That doesn’t mean that they should necessarily start, but they’re good options for certain matchups. Bornstein is called up because, in case you haven’t noticed, we’re incredibly weak at left back. I’m sure Jones will be called up, and Castillo probably will be as well.

Victor: Friedel retired from international play in 2005.

Abby: Probably to see some his players (or potential players) in action…

ManUTDfan: As SP says, Simek has struggled with injuries and with Spector, Cherundolo, and Hejduk, we’re going OK at right back.

David: I think that’s only half of the style of Bradley’s team… the other half is kicking around useless square passes until there’s a bad pass and the ball is turned over. Still, it’s hard to argue with Bradley’s results over his overall body of work. The main problem is that we just don’t have that many creative players.

Joamiq, do we not have that many creative players or does Bob not play many creative players? Donovan, Benny Feilhaber, Paco Torres and Freddy Adu are all very creative players. The problem is when you start Bradley and Clark in the middle you’re never going to see creative play. It seems Bradley prefers to have a strong defensive middle as opposed to a creative offensive middle.
