Missed the event. Was at my inlaws (whom have cable) and completely forgot to snatch the remote to watch. Sounds like it was a hell of a match.

Thanks for the pbp on CoverItLive.

wow. degenerate sure was the appropriate description of that live feed. one of the reasons i love soccer is because i dont have to listen to meathead announcers and watch ladies running around in bikinis drinking coors light in the rockies during commercial break. as i was simply trying to find out who scored in the guatemala game you can imagine how my heart sank when i began to read this piece of trash. it may have never occured to you that a female may actually be reading your supposed coverage. if you want to sit around your living room with your bros talking this kind of garbage than go ahead, but you should be embarassed to have brought this kind of ignorance and abuse into the public realm of the internet, im sure all of your moms would agree…shame on you for giving all those classy soccer players and fans a bad name…

2 things got to me.

#1 – Our performance was very flat in this “street fighter” atmosphere. I dunno, its wondeful to win away like that, but the team was so discombobulated. We all could have woken up today in a much worse mood is all i am saying.

#2 – That live tracker thing stinks. I stopped posting because my comments would not go through. I am sure I wasnt the only one.

And Lisa – what got to you about the live feed? I just scrolled through it, and didnt catch anything too out of this world. just curious.

well, i guess i was simply discouraged when trying to find an intelligent summary of the game and this was the first thing i came across. couldve been the ongoing coke and whores, beating hookers theme, not to mention making fun of players and fans from a third world country. the u.s. sets the standards for so much that happens internationally (although of course we are way behind in soccer), it is no wonder that we are so despised in other countries. if you want to create a fun little blog for you and your friends to goof around on than go ahead, everyone has a right to their sense of humor; but if these guys are trying to represent the u.s. on a world cup blog, try to do it with some poise and intelligence. i think 8th graders could have done a better job at this..

Really, Lisa? I can understand if it wasn’t your cup of tea, but I think you’re going off the deep end just a tad. I mean, should I really be “embarassed to have brought this kind of ignorance and abuse into the public realm of the internet”? Have you seen the internet? It’s a pretty filthy place and nothing in that live blog was something you wouldn’t see on network television (no dirty words, no nudity).

Also, how did we give those “classy soccer players and fans” a bad name? I assume you’re not speaking of the fans who brawl in the streets and throw bags of urine at the pitch or the players who throw flagrant elbows and make the opposition bleed.

Anyway, I’m sorry you didn’t enjoy it, but I don’t enjoy your exaggerated rhetoric, so I think we’re even.

Dave — not all comments are supposed to go through, in the CoverItLive format, when a reader submits a comment, the writers choose which to publish. Nothing personal about not all your comments going through, but its a live blog, not a chat session. It’s hard to pick and choose which comments to publish while trying to stay on topic with the live blog to some degree. But, it was out first time doing it and constructive criticism is always welcome.

Brooks – I had no idea. I figured it was a chat session with mods. Kind of like the running commentary on Ives site while he continues his description of the game. If that is the way your running it, then erase my #2 complaint.

Either way – we need better from our MNT.

I don’t think I would use “classy” in the same sentence with the Guatemalan team or their fans. First if all, Ruiz, the team captain, is just so dirty, and such a diver. What a total clown. Check out Tim Howard’s post game comments. Second, Cabrera absolutely lead with his shoulder and elbow on that collision with Lewis. He knew what he was doing. Third, notice the fencing around the pitch, and the security guards with riot gear protecting Lewis as he left the field? Dead giveaways? Fourth, chants of Hijo De Puta from what sounded like the entire crowd is a sure sign of class.
You make the call.

As for the game, we desperately need some creativity in mid field. Mastro and Bradley aren’t a good combo if you want offense. Individually I thought they both played the holding role well, but that’s the problem…they both played the same role.
Landon is invisible every time bob puts him on the wing, yet it is pretty common. WTF, Over?
I thought Gooch and Boca were very good, and Timmy was great, as always.
Other than that, pretty unimpressed. I was actually hoping Guatemala – Gentemala would score so Bob would have to change his strategy.

no brooks, you didnt drop any four letter words while talking about your buddy beating a hooker…what a guy. the internet, network television, sports arenas all over the world are filthy places. you can either contribute to that filth, or you can raise the bar. you also assumed correctly- i wasnt referring to rowdy fans who start brawls or players throwing elbows- i was referring to the players and fans who are trying to turn that image around. racist comments caught on tape at a columbus crew game, italians playing in empty arenas b/c thier fans cant be trusted, the brutal headbut that ended the world cup, the last bar fight i saw at a brewpub in north carolina over man u vs chelsea. you can either contribute, or you can raise the bar. any female athlete would agree that this is no exaggeration- more poise, more intelligence. i have already given you too much credit by simply visiting this site twice in one day, cest le vie…

Well, simply put, I’d rather make jokes than raise the bar so I think it’s for the best that you’re not reading this. It’s so much more fun when you don’t go through life trying to teach manners to people you’ve never met.

It was a dirty game by the Guatemalans. We were lucky to win. I don’t like Bob Bradley and his team selection.

CW – ok, dude, I was at the game, and you think you cant use guatemalan fans or player and classy in the same sentence, man, what sport, what REAL sport can you ever use the same sentence classy and fans, dude Ive seen the fans at baseball and american football games (trust you guys to be the only ones IN THE WORLD to chande the name of FOOTBALL to SOCCER!!) and dont be naeive in thinknig just because guatemalan fans where calling you players hijos de puta we are total savages, have you ever seen or heard the argentinians or the english!! you have probably never been out of the US, the way you automatically think just that because we are a third world country we are beneath you, that is just pathetic, you thnk you own the world, yeah my country has a level of extreme poverty of more than 60%, and a history of a 40 year old civil war, but I know a lot of people from the us, that despite havein everything, are total morons, talking like that about guatemalan fans and players really ticks me off, you think because we are poorer than you we are ignorant fools who just talk crap!! well let me tell you, I was at the game, the ref was totally off on most of his calls, for both teams, how come you dont mention that after Ruiz´s mistake he went to apollogize to the goalie and the guy hit his hand in dissaproval and told him to f!#% off!, yeah very classy!! just like this blog!! now im not saying usa has a bad footbal team (ok SOCCER! haha) because they are consistant, diciplined, know how to win, and they are in top physical condition, and the goal was a very well scored goal, but dude, Guatemala had USA on the ropes most of the second half, i dont want to excuse that the ref was the reason we lost, but the ref really made some bad calls, and Guatemala was superior to USA, unfortunately, you US KNOWS when to take advantage of the situation and KNOWS how to score, we may lack discipline, but we have the talent, and the CLASS to give you a run for your money. Still you won, so in the end thats what matters, and away from guate, we will probably loose. But still GUATE made you sweat! and dont even pretend they didnt!

Okay JC, I can agree with you that Guatemala looked way better than the US for a lot of the match, but they also played WAY dirtier. Maybe you could call it “scrappier” since it wasn’t all illegal, but you can’t defend a flying elbow to the face or intentionally kicking the keeper in the head when he has the ball. That was hardly a “mistake”, just watch the replay. Also, while fans in the US in many sports can be rude and even ruthless, you’ll never EVER see players protected from the fans by policemen in RIOT SQUAD GEAR. I think the point stands.

But back to the game, I think the handball by the US in the box in the first half should have been a penalty. Down by 1 goal in that crazy atmosphere, I don’t think we would have gotten back into the game. Guatemala at least deserved a draw.

Sorry guys. I’m on West Coast time and I’m not a morning person. Post is up. Congrats to both the Women’s and Men’s teams for kicking ass in 24 hours.

I’ve recorded every game since the 2002 World Cup and my cable box on me last night. Is there anyone who recorded the game that could burn me a DVD? Thanks.

JC-
No racism or superiority complex here mi amigo. I am married to a beautiful girl from Bolivia. I have lived in south america. I play futbol each week with great friends from all over central and south america. I speak spanish 50% of the time in my home. Sorry if my comments lead you to believe otherwise.
My point is that Ruiz is DIRTY! As the capt he sets the standard for the team, and it is evident in how they play. The hit from Cabrera, lots of diving, the guy that took a half-kick at Bocanegra after his goal, are all examples you really can’t say anything to refute. His fake apology to Tim Howard is just part of his MO. He is also a lying diver, evident week in and week out in the MLS.
Guate was the better team for much of the game. No question, and very frustrating for U. S. Fans. We have a lot of work to do as a team.
As for Guatemala, good luck in the remainder of your qualifiers. I suspect in 2010 Ruiz and the rest will be watching the world cup on TV.

John- very good points, but the policemen in RIOT SQUAD GEAR are just precautionary, we have never actually had a significant incident, and not all fans are like that, I mean, I wouldnt throw anything or hurt any player in the us, and most Guatemalans wouldnt either, I actually went to the game to see some of the us players that I consider are really good. but you are right that in SOME sections of the stadium, fans are more frustrated and agresive from the many failures from our national team, and it reflects in our attitude.

As for the game, Guatemala may have played scrapier, but its because they wanted to show the us, they were not intimidated by them. its not the best way to do so I agree, but comon, some of your players have twice the size of ours and where shoving and pushing also. Anyway, very good points, and I suspect US will more than likely be in the world cup.

CW- Dude, players from US are smart, because, remember I was at the game, and there was a lot of pushing and shoving from the us team also, you just didnt see it on camara, I did, I was there. And dude, the ref was just looking for an excuse to send someone off, from where i saw it they were both going for the ball, but cabrera has allways been agresive when going for the ball, Im not sure he meant to hurt your player, from where I was sitting it didnt seem like that, plus they BOTH got hurt, and the stadium got quiet when they clashed, I wasnt able to catch the replay so I cant really verify that, but the ref wanted to level the game, simple as that, he was scared of the us. As for Ruiz, wouldnt you be ticked off if your team had traided you to TORONTO the day before the game against usa? but yeah that was a foul against the goalie, I agree. Finally im not sure if your wishing Guate luck in a sarcastic way with your prediction about us not being at the 2010 world cup…Since im a fan of my seleccion, (and according to you not a classy one, hehe)I wish very much for my country to get to the WC2010, but if im being objective and realistic…..mmm…harsh reallity….well I can only hope for the best.

CW- and dude, dont patronice me with calling me amigo, you make me feel mexican, but ill belive you, just a little slang for you, in guate, we call a friend CUATE, and speaking 50% spanish, well we call that Spanglish. lol, later.

I’m confused as to where all of the accusations are coming from. JC: nobody is talking bad about guatemala because it is a country in poverty. All of the negative things said were the result of watching a team that just did not play a pretty game. They were brutal on tackles and even worse as sportsmen. You should be ashamed of your own team for the way they portrayed themselves on a national stage.

However, it is easy to admit that guatemala was the better team and should have won or drawn.

Lisa: really if you don’t like it go somewhere else. You could have found out the info you seeked in a hundred other places. And why would you read the entire live blog if it upset you so much. Do yourself a favor and stop trying to find things to huff your woman rights chest at and relax. You’ll live much longer.

I had forgotten about this blog, take it easy scott, Im NOT ashamed at all, belive me usa was harsh on tackles too, I was dissapointed on certain things about Guatemala, but not ashamed. but i think ive tried to make my position clear in the previous posts i made so I wont repeat myself. anyway, USA is definetly through to the next round in light of recent scores, well deserved by the way, Id like to discuss canadas team, but i honestly have no idea how they are playing, right now im just wishing Guatemala can make it.
