We’re in.
Wow, what a game. For all the stick we’ve given him here, Conor Casey came up shockingly huge and deserves a lot of credit for his performance. Landy again left his mark. And holy crap did we get lucky after Stu Holden’s handball.
More to come on this match later, but we’re in the World Cup! What a travesty this match wasn’t on television. The USSF should be ashamed.
Couldn’t watch the game. So, from the highlights it does look like Casey played well. The Stu Holden hand ball should’ve never been. That ball should’ve been headed out. How can the ball drop in at the center small box?
Against a Germany, England, Brasil, Italy, etc., they will crush us on those crosses.
Davies should’ve finished a little better and Howard played decent, not his best performance from the highlights…lol. The Honduranean keeper was awful. All in all, the US deserved to win the game from the highlights…lol
GLTAL
The US goes in because the CONCACAF is a joke, get real man, then when the US faces a European team in the World Cup and they lose. The US loves organizing friendlies with European nations as long as those nations send in their B-squads. Its the same thing Mexico does when they play a friendly in Mexico… This is why I could never root for the US, even when they played against Italy in the last World Cup, I knew they weren’t going to win… they always do the same thing, they start respecting the opponent too much, they only win against cream-puff associations like Mexico, in do or die scenarios like the Iraq game in 98 or all of the games in 2006 the US were absolutely horrible… then the coaches always talk about giving new talent a chance? huh did I miss something? the World Cup is not a time to experiment and give a bunch of slacker college kids a chance… you go in it to try to win it. If you want to give someone a chance, organize a friendly… but during the World Cup you send in a squad you think will have a chance at winning the whole damn thing. And don’t get me started on the MLS… the club names make me nauseous — Real Salt Lake? are you kidding me? NY Red Bull? named after a freaking energy drink… Columbus Crew? what is that? And the worst one… CHIVAS USA… that’s an abomination if there ever was one.

Thanks for the irrelevant opinions and misguided bitterness about Uruguay missing five of the last eight World Cups, Fernando.
You could never root for the US because you know they won’t win? Wow, what a great fan you are.
Fernando, you’re an American who supports other countries yet visits this blog to talk shit. Damn, that’s pathetic.
Fernando, nobody cares. Piss off.
Is it the USSF that should be ashamed? The way I understood it the Honduran Federation sold the rights to some outlet that simply wouldn’t agree to a reasonable fee for any of the US carriers to be able to show the game.
I saw bits and pieces of a poor feed on justin tv. From what I saw in the second half honduras were attacking in waves. Again we were unable to play any kind of posession game, which puts a huge burden on a defense that frankly just isn’t that good.
We have had 3 yrs to learn from the ‘06 debacle. Some of the faces on the field have changed, but overall I really can’t say we’re doing anything different. Our back 4 are still not good enough and our midfield still can’t posess the ball. Our forwards are better, but that only matters if the whole team is connected and the ball is coming to the forwards from the midfield…NOT from the backline via countless balls over the top.
Unless we get a miraculously weak draw I don’t see the US advancing out of the group stage. Hope I’m wrong.

First half looked like your typical American road performance, one where the other team would dictate how the game was played and we might catch them on a counter or two to get the victory or draw. Hondurus had a few nice chances which they couldn’t put away.
The 2nd half was a different story as the Americans dominated the run of play (if not the scoreboard). Not sure whether they Hondorans tired. I think the second half chances for Hondurus were a testament to how shaky the US backline was because we were dominant in midfield during the 2nd 45.
Pretty talented side the for Hondurus on the whole. They’ll be rooting hard for us on Wednesday.

The owner of our local soccer pub told me the closed circuit TV company was charging them $20 times the maximum capacity of the bar to carry the game. We’re down in SEC football country, and half the bar was there watching LSU-Florida, so he couldn’t justify the cost.
I hope that company lost its a$$.

New to the site, and LOVE your coverage.
It is definitely a travesty that this game wasn’t televised. And Fernando, what all the other commentators said.
The huge concern for the USMNT is their defense. Bornstein and Onyewu were pretty solid against a loaded Spain side. Bocanegra looks pretty shaky right now. One of the reasons they beat Spain was that Spain refused to make adjustments in the 2nd half by attacking the US down the flanks. Flip over to the Brazil game that’s exactly what Brazil did. The worst defensive game they played recently was against Mexico when the Tricolores attacked at will an practically shredded the USMNT defense. I’m surprised the game was even that close.
Bob Bradley, better shore up the ‘D’ else it’s going to be a short stay in South Africa.
Brooks… I’m not a fan, I never was a fan, and never will be a fan. I’d rather root for a country that misses out on the World Cup but won it when it actually meant something than for a nation that hides behind false results.
Keep on cheering the US as they continue to underperform.
I am an American, to quote Orson Welles in Citizen Kane, “I am an American first, always have been” yes, I love this country, I love the stars and stripes and apple pie but the football this country practices is an abomination. If it wasn’t, you wouldn’t have all these European teams coming in the summer to put some type of interest back into the fans.
If you want to instill any level of pride, you gotta tell the European clubs to stay in Europe… when held up to the European standard, American football is seriously flawed.
Three Cheers for the Red, White & Blue!!!

1 European clubs come here to make a quick buck, not to “put in” interest. That’s an irrelevant tangent anyway that I won’t discuss any further. 2) World Cups in the 30s meant more? Interesting considering you only had like 8 countries participate (when the European nations weren’t boycotting traveling to South America).
The defense was on the backfoot for many stretches of the game, especially on crosses. Davies was a non-factor aside from his missed sitter and flick to Casey for the 1st.
I’m just glad qualification is wrapped up so I can actually enjoy being at Wednesday’s game.

Fernando,
I totally know what you mean. I dumped my wife because I thought the woman across the street was hotter. I don’t understand how that makes me a jerk.
Right on Fernando! The US shouldn’t try to compete or grow in football! It doesn’t matter where you are headed, it’s where you’ve been that counts! Viva el pasado! Jackass.

It means something to me, Fernando. And I assume everybody else who reads this blog.
Great news for the US, hopefully we can put together a run and make it out of our group next summer. Bad news about Charlie Davies, though:

Hope he’s okay…

Fernando, the past is the past, why don’t you look at the achievements the US has made this year? By the way, you say that US Soccer is seriously flawed, well I found some flaws in your argument:
A. “Concacaf is a joke” Have you even seen the qualifiers this year? Honduras has improved significantly and even has EPL players of their own now (case in pt.: Wilson Palacios for Tottenham). Moreover, we literally had to fight in order to get out of jams against Costa Rica and El Salvador? Still sounds easy? Fail #1
B. “The US loves organizing friendlies with European nations as long as those nations send in their B-squads. Its the same thing Mexico does when they play a friendly in Mexico.” Uh, I think you are forgetting how intense our rivalry against our border neighbors is. Even if we don’t win in Mexico, they know full well that we come to play and the Mexicans call up guys like Omar Bravo, Giovani dos Santos and Rafael Marquez against us. BTW, now that we humiliated Spain in the Confederations Cup, I bet you that Europe isn’t gonna give us B-Teams anymore. Fail #2
C. “[W]hen they played against Italy in the last World Cup, I knew [USA] weren’t going to win.” Well that’s very patriotic to give up hope on your country before the match even started. Besides we were the only team that Italy failed to beat in the 2006 WC. Fail #3
D. “[T]hen the coaches always talk about giving new talent a chance? Huh, did I miss something? the World Cup is not a time to experiment and give a bunch of slacker college kids a chance.” In the 1990 WC, maybe. But definitely not with Bob Bradley around unless if it was the Gold Cup or minor friendlies. Besides, it is frankly insulting to call guys like Onyewu, Michael Bradley, and Holden slackers, without friendlies they would have never had the chance to become some of our most important players on the pitch. Fail #4
E. “And don’t get me started on the MLS, the club names make me nauseous.” Well, you got to start somewhere. Besides where would stars like Tim Howard, DaMarcus Beasley, Clint Dempsey and Landon Donovan be without the MLS? Exactly. Fail #5
It is obvious through your post that you have no idea how much our side has improved with Bob Bradley as our coach. Watch some 2009 Confederation Cup and WC qualifier highlights on Youtube before making rather superfluous comments. While your at it, make your English teacher proud and fix up your grammar.

“While your at it, make your English teacher proud and fix up your grammar.”
While you’rE at it. You almost had it!
anyways, there’s no doubt that the USMNT has come along way since the 90’s, when alexi lasis was your best player (LOL).
But US still has a long way to go, especially in the world cup. out of the last 4 world cups, you guys managed to get to the round of 16 twice, and once as a THIRD PLACE team (1994).

First off- When I say “football” I do not mean soccer, I am referencing American style football. US soccer in comparison to European standards is flawed or is it still not well developed, yet? Soccer in the US is just not embraced enough as it should be, thus far. As it may sound repetitive to many people, this countries main sport is, and will always be, American Football. Kids here don’t grow up playing soccer, unlike the rest of the world. NEWS FLASH—–Europe, South America, and basically every other continent outside of North America, well…..their main sport is soccer!!! The MLS is not as experienced as other countries in soccer because it has not been around as long. We are still, in a way, the new kids on the block in soccer. Saying that US soccer is terrible compared to European soccer is kind of like saying the European Football League is terrible compared to the NFL. NEWS FLASH——The European Football League has not been around very long compared to the NFL. Likewise, the MLS has not been around very long compared to European leagues. Not to shy from the truth, US soccer is getting better; however, you can’t expect it to be better than European soccer or any other countries soccer because we are still a young to the sport. There will be a day, when the US can be competitive enough to hang with European soccer, but it will take time. Fernando, cheer for your team or get the hell out of the stadium.
