Rivers Cuomo Sings About Pat Noonan
Nick posted the above video in the comments of the Thursday Night News Nuggets post and I thought it was pretty funny, so here it is. The song, titled “My Day is Coming”, is off Weezer frontman Rivers Cuomo’s new collection of solo work: Alone II: The Home Recordings.
Whether the song is entirely about the eventual success of the US MNT is up for debate, but either way, Rivers (who is a big US soccer fan) feels the need to sing the names of the US MNT roster circa, I don’t know, 2005? Here are the full lyrics:
Sometimes I lose my pride
And leave my best behind
And everybody has a good laugh
But still I understand
The chance is in my hand
Someday I’m gonna make ‘em believe
So people all around
Let me head you lay it down
This is all the hope I have
My Day Is Coming
My Day Is Coming
My Day Is Coming, it’s coming up someday
It ain’t too far from now
I’m gonna work it out
Today is better than yesterday
My shining star will rise
And lead me to the prize
The best of times are on the way
My Day Is Coming, it’s coming someday
My Day Is Coming, it might be today
My Day Is Coming, it’s coming up someday
And when I get the things I want to have
Will I look back on the critics
Will I say that they were stupid
That they underestimated me all along
Landon Donovan, DaMarcus Beasley, Freddy Adu, Clint Dempsey, Oguchi Onyewu, Bobby Convey, Eddie Johnson, Steve Cherundolo, Brian Ching, Carlos Bocanegra, Jimmy Conrad, Pat Noonan,
Let me hear you say
So, there you go. The one and only time Brian Ching will ever have a pop song about him…well, at least until his upcoming single Can’t Stop (The Nose Bleeds) tops the charts.

Just a bit more information about it. MTV.com had a July 2006 article which mentioned the song. Looks like it was a response to the 2006 World Cup performance (of course, a few of the players mentioned had no hand in the 2006 WC.) ….and again, no mention of Kenny Cooper [kicks dirt.]

Some of the tunes Cuomo has been recording are autobiographical. “Heart Songs” is about all the artists and records that have influenced him, “From Gordon Lightfoot’s ‘[The Wreck of the] Edmund Fitzgerald’ when I was 5 to Nirvana’s Nevermind.” Others are just plain nonsensical: “Our Time Will Come” is his ode to the underachieving U.S. men’s soccer team.
But again, he’s writing them for no one in particular.

Seriously, great stuff for any fan of the USMNT and/or Weezer.

One last soccer related video from Rivers from the 1st “Alone” album….
It provides a brief explanation behind his love of soccer, some clips of the US national team, and clips of him in the Mia Hamm/Nomar Garciapara Celbrity soccer match in LA (set to some previously never released material.)

Thanks for the info, Nick. You win the prize of the day.
That prize will arrive at your home or place of business shortly. I suggest you wear a helmet.

Song is kind of weak, but the premise is heart warming for an American soccer fan.
