Highlights from USA vs. Guatemala; I finally found them!

April 2nd, 2007 | By: Connor Fabiano | 2 Comments »

Well, I promised you guys that I’d post highlights when I found them, and - while it took almost a full week - I finally did! I kept searching YouTube and Google, but continued to come up empty handed. USSoccer.com didn’t post the highlights either (makes me a little angry), but then I ran across a Spanish version on YouTube and it occurred to me that I needed to try “Guatemala vs. Estados Unidos.” That did the trick!

USA 0 - 0 Guatemala; A Scoreless Draw

Well, we couldn’t score a goal, so I’m upset right now. Guatemala went in with a 4-5-1 and basically walled up their entire half of the field.

USA 3 - 1 Ecuador; Donovan Earns #10 with a Hat Trick

March 25th, 2007 | By: Connor Fabiano | 9 Comments »

The US Men’s National Team met a strong Ecuadorian side in sunny (and hot) Tampa, Florida today. Kick-off began at 82 degrees with a record attendance of 31,547. The pitch at Raymond James Stadium was in poor condition, but Landon Donovan - earning a hat trick - was most certainly not.

Clark and Rolfe Out Due to Injury; Bradley Calls Up 2 Dynamo Players

March 22nd, 2007 | By: Connor Fabiano | 2 Comments »

Here’s a brief update on what’s going on over in Florida, where the US Men are holding their training camp:

On Monday, Bob Bradley announced that Chris Rolfe and Ricardo Clark would be leaving the camp due to knee injuries. Clark sprained his right knee ligament last weekend in the CONCACAF Champions Cup and Rolfe is out with the same condition.

Houston Dynamo teammates Wade Barrett and Brian Mullan have been added in their place.

Wade Barret is a defender with one cap with the US National Team, which he earned in 2002 against El Salvador. Barret was called up into camp in 2005 for the World Cup qualifier against Costa Rica, however suffered a hamstring injury and wasn’t able to hop onto the pitch.

Brian Mullan is a midfielder and currently has two caps with the US MNT. He earned his first in 2004 against Poland.

The camp began on Monday and will continue until Friday, when they travel to Tampa, Florida in preparation for their Sunday match against Ecuador.

On a separate, but related note, load this pic and check out the expression on Gooch’s face when Dempsey does this side volley. That’s my boy right there!

Keeper Showdown: Howard vs. Keller

March 21st, 2007 | By: Connor Fabiano | 2 Comments »

When Bob Bradley announced his roster for the Ecuador and Guatemala friendlies last week, I was surprised to see Kasey Keller on the list. He’s 37-years-old now and my assumption was that he would drift away from international play. My assumption was wrong and he’s been called up along with youngster Tim Howard.

Well folks, looks like we have a good ol’ fashioned KEEPER SHOWDOWN.

Howard has already proven himself in England and recently impressed in Arizona with his 2-0 shutout against Mexico.

Keller is an American soccer legend and the veteran doesn’t seem to be slowing down. While Kasey hasn’t made an appearance on the US National Team since the loss to Ghana in 2006, he’s been staying fit in Germany’s Bundesliga, where he’s continuously battled it out against top flight competition.

I think we’re all pretty certain that we’ll see one keeper play Ecuador and another take on Guatemala. Bob Bradley seems to share the same opinion:

“The likelihood is that we’ll split these two games. That’s not a final decision, but that’s certainly what we’re thinking at this point.”

Well, unless either Kasey or Timmy get injured in camp (which is very unlikely) we’re sure to see both of them next week, each taking their turn.

Anyway, I think it’s great that Bradley called up Keller. If he plays well, why not? Plus, keepers have much longer life spans than “the others.”

Here’s Bob Bradley one more time on his thoughts about Keller:

“(What) impressed me was just his desire to come into camp and compete. For the moment, he continues to play at a high level and that’s something that we look for when we put camps together.”

I think we’ll see Kasey Keller on Sunday against Ecuador and Tim Howard Wednesday against Guatemala. Reason? Well it really could go either way, but I just have a hunch that Bradley will put Keller in for the bigger game against Ecuador. Not that Tim Howard isn’t fully qualified, but he just got his shutout against Mexico, and Bradley might want to see Keller again versus top competition.

And what does this mean for the summer tournaments? We’ll almost certainly see Howard in one and Keller in the other. It’s too soon to tell (plus I’m not Bob Bradley…yet) but I think Tim Howard will be the main man for the Gold Cup and Kasey Keller will join the squad for the Copa America in Venezuela.
