Altidore Scores First Spanish Goal, Then Second, Then Third

September 5th, 2008 | By: Carter Daly | 6 Comments »

Jozy Altidore got his first bite of regular season action today with Villarreal…sort of. See, the fixture today against Regional Preferente (that’s the equivalent of the Spanish 5th division) side El San Rafael del Río had just about nothing to do with anything. It was a friendly, after Villarreal opened their official La Liga campaign last weekend with a 1-1 draw with Osasuna, but it technically did take place during the regular season. What is this MLS?

Regardless of the meaning of the match (nothing) and the apparent quality of the side (none), Jozy Altidore started up front and bagged three goals for the Yellow Submarine, that’s a hat trick folks, in the 7-1 thrashing over Rafa of the River or whatever. Villarreal sent a fairly full squad to this thing, so good for the kid to come away as the leading scorer. We won’t know how much this might effect the coach’s thoughts on Jozy’s playing time (currently resting at 0), but it certainly can’t hurt his chances of seeing the pitch when Villarreal takes on Deportivo on Sunday.

Hopefully just the beginning of Jozy’s goal scoring exploits in Spain…

Anyone at least a little impressed?

Has Villarreal shelved plans to send Altidore out on load this season? Their forward situation is awfully crowded, and it’s hard to see him beating out the likes of Nihat, Rossi, and Llorente for minutes in meaningful matches.

I’m pretty sure that Villareal said that they would keep Altidore for at least the first half of the season due to all the injuries.

I would hope this at least helps a little bit. Is the Villareal game on GolTV this week anyone know?

Kyle, I don’t think it is. Might want to double check that closer to matchday, though.

Either way, their Champions League match against Man U on the 17th will probably be broadcast by ESPN2 or Classic here in the States.

This would be like raving about Lebron James scoring 80 points against a CBA team… who really cares?

Because, just like a fine performance in training, I’m sure it helped gain him notice from the decision makers at Villareal. It also couldn’t have hurt his confidence and, as we saw over the weekend, it led to a fine second half in a La Liga match…but who cares about any of that.
