Americans at Work in the Champions League

October 23rd, 2007 | By: Carter Daly | No Comments »

It sucks to be an American who loves Champions League soccer. The games come on at an obscure 2:40, with only one fixture on the tube while surely the one you really want to watch is either designated for the 2:30 AM ESPN Classic replay (if you are lucky) or left off the television all together.

Yet try as they must to keep us Yanks from our Champions League fix, those Americans
actually playing the sport for a living are beginning the infiltrating of the system as we speak, hopefully leading to increased coverage of the grandest of all club competitions.

DaMarcus Beasley and his ‘Gers take on Barcelona at the Ibrox today at 2:40 PM, and would you look at that, our speedy friend’s fixture will be televised by espn2. This must be a good omen.

Beasley is returning off of his foot injury he picked up during the Switzerland friendly and is said to be back to full fitness. A player like Beasley is just the spark an underdog like Rangers needs to pull of a Champions League upset of this magnitude. We know Beasley has a knack for the big CL goals, lets see what our speedy southpaw can pull off today.

Tomorrow Benfica takes on Celtic at the Estado de Luz in what has the makings to be Freddy Adu’s world takeover special. He will surely be on the subs bench, and another difference making performance like he has been turning out every time he touches the field and bigsoccer posters won’t be the only ones noticing anymore. The Champions League is a whole different breed of animal, and when you turn heads there, the football world (and superclub managers across it) takes note.
