Maurice Edu Starts, Impresses for Rangers

March 1st, 2009 | By: Brooks Peck | 2 Comments »

As The Scotsman put it:

Rangers were without the injured Pedro Mendes, which allowed Maurice Edu a rare start in midfield. The American’s more prosaic qualities allowed Ferguson more freedom to break forward, the result of which was a goal for the Rangers captain, his first of the season.

Edu played the full 90 minutes in Rangers’ 1-0 win over Hamilton Academical and showed his side what they’ve been missing with him on the bench. After the match, manager Walter Smith gave Edu a glowing review:

“It was a difficult place to ask him to come in and play, but I thought he did exceptionally well.

“Maurice has to be patient. I have said to him that it can take a period of time to settle in at the Old Firm.

“He was playing college football in America up until a year-and-a-half ago. He had one season in the MLS. He is still young in terms of experience at professional level. I think he can be an exceptional midfield player.”

So, it appears they haven’t forgotten about Mo in Scotland and it seems with a performance like this (setting up your club’s captain for his first goal of the season has to be worth extra points, right?), he should be line for more looks.

Thanks for the post. Good stuff.

A quick word on Michael Bradley. He again scored for Mogleasdfjkl;eajafe–this time from the penalty spot; however, Mogleasdfjk;lafe lost which leaves them in the relegation zone. This has typically been a bad spot for Americans; however, it appears that Bradley has an out in his contract and likely would bolt if they are relegated according to good sources.
