Who Are Ya? Mexico
Readers of this blog certainly know a lot about the Men’s Mexican National Team, but with the USWNT upcoming friendlies against Mexico later this month, I thought I’d attempt a little “what’s up with Mexico Feminino?” Except, while the USA released it’s roster (and it seems Kristine Lilly actually did not go walk the earth after all), The FMF website crashed my browser. I did get far enough to read a little blurb about Mexico coach, Leonardo Cuellar (homeboy played in NASL as well as the FMF by the way). But a roster announcement? Can’t find it. I sent a help-me request over to Mexico so I’m hoping for a little cross-blog assistance. In the meantime, here’s what I do know…
Mexico is a bit loaded with strikers. First they’ve got most capped Maribel Dominguez who is perhaps best known for her 2004 signing with second-division men’s side, Celaya. Unfortunately FIFA ruled the men play with the men and the women play with the women and that’s that. It all ended before she even started. FIFA fail. Oh and FIFA banned her from playing in any exhibition game with men which I think is a bit excessive. There’s also Charlyn Corral who I don’t think is 21 yet but is already some sort of crazy goal scoring wonderkid. And 2006 FIFA player of the year runner up and now Atlanta Beat’s own Monica Ocampo should presumably be making an appearance and causing the US defense all sorts of fits.
Tough break for the US but let’s not forget their last meeting (or at least the last one I remember) was in Mexico and the US beat Mexico to win the CONCACAF Olympic qualifiers. Apparently Mexico recovered from that by playing (and usually beating) a bunch of university teams in the US.
So anyways, I’m gonna keep my internet searching eyes open for a roster and see if I can eek out any more info about Mexico’s women’s side before the friendlies. I’ll leave you with a bit more info. Monica Gonzales is a defender and Mexico’s captain who also dabbles a bit in modeling. Seems she participated in the 2008 WPS Combine but didn’t get selected by a team. Here’s hoping the upcoming friendlies may re-introduce her to the current round of coaches.
