USWNT to play Germany in Cleveland

Andy, this isn’t the Ohio State Journalism School. This is the big time.
US Soccer announced yet another friendly and this time it’s in Cleveland on May 22 where the USWNT will presumably beat Germany again (hey, I just call ‘em as I see ‘em) and maybe go visit the Garfield monument – for the president, not the cat – and hit up the Rock And Roll Hall of Fame. This game is at 6pm ET and will be shown on ESPN2.
As friendlies go, I say this may not be the last one before we begin World Cup Qualifying which will likely be tied in with October’s Gold Cup tournament. In fact, the Caribbean and Central American qualifiers happening right now are probably tournaments to determine which team or teams from those regions get a Gold Cup spot. In 2006, USA and Canada were awarded automatic byes to the semifinal round so presumably a similar situation will happen again in 2010. Hopefully FIFA’s masterplan with all of this will work out. But the ridiculously poor scan of their pdf announcing international dates is not instilling much confidence in me right now.
In other news, the only player called up for the Mexico friendlies who is not pro yet will be playing for W-League side, Pali Blues, this year. That player being US Soccer’s own ambassador to Chile, Alex Morgan. But since Santa Monica is a pretty big commute from UC Berkeley, I’m guessing she won’t actually play for the Blues until later in the season.
