I extracted the soccer related snippets from the SI article. According to Arena:

- the US soccer team despite the inflated #4 FIFA ranking is a sleeping giant and is poised for much bigger things, he firmly believes in the temas potential

- the WC 2002 quarterfinal run was atleast equal to the Miracle on Ice in 1980 Olympics (Ice Hockey, USA vs Russia)

- Senate minority leader Harry Reid, who's son has won in the NCAA under Arena, said that Arena is a great motivator and manages to pull more out of people than anyone else can.

- His peers believe that Arena is one of a handfule of elite coaches around

The article goes on to mention a few lines of the bustup Arena had with MLS soccer officials when he blasted them for not understanding the game back in 2004 and the eventual patch-up.

However 80% of the content speaks of Arenas childhood and his family, specially focusing on his relationship with his sister who unfortunately succumbed to breast cancer.

No surprises that the article puts Arena in good light, but in pure footballing terms there isn't much in it. The content on the SI site itself was much more informative IMO.

Well, at least you were well informed for the draft!

Was there anything at all in the Arena article worth posting?

So I went ahead and put down 3.99 for this weeks Sports Illustrated. After flipping 20 wasted pages on the NFL draft I made it to the article on Bruce Almighty. It talks mostly of his personal life and not much about team USA.

IMHO the link to the SI website was much more valuable than the magazine print. Grant Wahl deserves a pullitzer for it :D

As always, thanks for scanning the net, Daryl, and sharing this.

I grew up in Knoxville, Tennessee, and UT basketball fans sure enjoyed Bruce Pearl's first season there, but...

Does the analogy in #9 resonate with anyone other than me?
