Arena Names 19, Dempsey Left Out
Bruce Arena has named his 19 man roster for the game against Germany. Big news is that Clint Dempsey has been excluded following his recent punch up and subsequent suspension by club side New England Revolution.
As the game doesn’t fall on an international friendly date Arena couldn’t call on certain European based players. German clubs will release players to both the USA and Germany rosters and Reading’s massive lead in the English Championship means they can afford to let Hahnemann and Convey travel. Corey Gibbs makes a return to the roster following his injury problems, though the fact that ADO Den Haag had no problem releasing him doesn’t bode well for his chances of playing first team football there.
The roster looks like this:
Goalkeepers:
Marcus Hahnemann (Reading, England)
Kasey Keller (Borussia Moenchengladbach, Germany)
Defenders:
Gregg Berhalter (Energie Cottbus, Germany)
Steve Cherundolo (Hannover 96, Germany)
Jimmy Conrad (Kansas City)
Cory Gibbs (ADO Den Haag, Netherlands)
Frankie Hejduk (Columbus)
Heath Pearce (FC Nordsjaelland, Denmark)
Eddie Pope (Salt Lake)
Midfielders:
Bobby Convey (Reading, England)
Landon Donovan (Los Angeles)
Chris Klein (Salt Lake)
Pablo Mastroeni (Colorado)
Ben Olsen (D.C.)
Kerry Zavagnin (Kansas City)
Forwards:
Brian Ching (Houston)
Eddie Johnson (Kansas City)
Taylor Twellman (New England)
Josh Wolff (Kansas City)

As his biggest pimp, I am happy to see Heath Pearce in the mix. Would prefer to put Hejduk to pasture and have never seen a reason to be excited about Zavagnin. Overall a good selection given the limited number of European players available.

OK, so let’s talk starting lineup for the game. First, let’s slot Pearce in at left back since he’s being pimped out so well. Behrhalter and Pope in the middle, Cherondolo on the right.
Bruce hasn’t moved Donovan upfront - yet - but let’s hope he at least slots him wide for this game with Convey out wide on the left. Maestroni and Olsen in the middle. This should be Olsen’s big shot to make the team. Barring a really impressive substitution performance, Zavagnin’s window probably closed after the Poland game. I guess it’s not completely inconceivable that Arena gives him or Klein the starting nod.
Twellman and Johnson upfront. Johnson to prove whether he should be considered a starter and Twellman to prove he deserves minutes. Wolf comes on for 20-30 minutes to prove he score as a sub, which is the only role he’s got a shot at right now. Brian Ching makes his last trip to Germany for the US.

Have heard that Donovan will be out for this one with a calf injury. The guy just doesn’t seem to do very well with anything associated with Germany.
