Berhalter Joins 1860 Munich
The number of Americans playing top flight European football next season has been reduced by one. After captaining Energie Cottbus’ into Germany’s 1. Bundesliga, Gregg Berhalter will fall back into 2. Bundesliga after signing a two year contract with 1860 Munich.
Seems Berhalter wasn’t happy with the new deal Cottbus offered him, and has left his old club on slightly bad terms. “I fulfilled my goal with Cottbus. I helped get them promoted,” Berhalter told SoccerTimes. “They offered me a new contract, but I wasn’t happy with it, not some of the things they were doing, so I’ve moved on and next year we’ll try to help another team go up.”
It means that he’ll lead 1860 back to the Bundesliga. They can sure use him to bolster their horrid defense.

Harvey,
I saw in your bio that you support 1860, so it’s good to note that you’re happy to get Berhalter. I’ve got to admit that as I don’t follow the Bundesliga too much, I can’t really comment on Berhalter’s performance the past two seasons.
However, the fact that Energie made him captain says a lot to me.
So, what’s the real story about his move? What were Energie doing that he didn’t like so much?

yah, and a transfer fee of $0.00 (0.00 Euros)?!?
what’s up with that?

Berhalter has been a marginal player at best. I’m surprised they didn’t pay 1860 to take him off their hands.

Not sure what this guy’s source is but here you go: “The 32-year-old recently won promotion to the German Bundesliga with Energie Cottbus, but his coach didn’t think he could hack it at the top level. Berhalter was traded over the weekend to 1860 Munich, which last season barely avoided relegation from the second division.”

Yikes!
Just when I praise the guy a couple of days ago for being so important to Energie that they’d name him captain, Cottbus fails to reward him properly (at least in his mind).
What does that mean?
