Bruce and Beasley BFF

June 16th, 2006 | By: Daryl | 11 Comments »

At yesterday’s press conference, Arena was keen to play down suggestions of a conflict between himself and DMB, maybe a little too keen. He also refuted Bobby Convey’s comment that players “didn’t know what to do”. Click on Bruce for an mp3 of the press conference, or read on for highlights.

On changes to the first eleven:

Arena promised “we’ll make some changes” to the line up, but wouldn’t be drawn on specifics. When asked if there would be “wholesale changes” the press conference quickly got bogged down in semantics. “What’s your definition of wholesale?” etc. Typical Bruce.

On Bobby Convey’s and DMB’s comments about not knowing their roles:

“I would have to say that you’ve got two young players commenting and you’ve got an anxious press corps that wants to jump on everything. If anything we were over-organized.”

When asked how DMB has reacted to their recent disagreement:

“DaMarcus hasn’t been a problem with anything. There’s no issues with DaMarcus, there hasn’t been any problems with DaMarcus with anything. I hate to tell you that, I know it doesn’t sound as exciting as you want it to be but there’s no problems with DaMarcus. I think maybe remarks from me and DaMarcus probably.. should not have been stated… because for whatever reason the final product doesn’t look how it really is, but we don’t have any problems.”

Very contorted way of admitting he screwed up, but I’ll give him credit. He made a mistake to call out DMB and admits it.

That said, given his present form, I hope the only way Beas makes it on the field is for the postgame photos.

The WAHL article at CNNSI made a good point: The US lacks a vocal leader who will call out other players.

It should be Donovan, but he himself is a disappearing act when it comes to the big time.

Thus, while I don’t like there to be media rights, somebody had to say something to Beasley

Well, somebody should call out Beasley. He’s looked lost on the pitch for months, been benched at PSV for the better part of the season and picked up a DUI to boot. Somehow I don’t think things are going too smoothly in DMB’s coconut right now. And being on the right had nothing to do with anything - he looked horrid on the left in the run-up and switching with Convey in the Czech game altered nothing. Right now his play is a huge impediment…

Wasn’t there a comment by him that Australia was only on Germany “to make up the numbers”.?

Now looking at the Group E and Group F Tables…..

Wow…we’re just like one of those squabbling European or South American sides now! Airing our dirty laundry in the press like some Italian prima donna athletes or Agentinian spoiled brats. The difference, of course, is that those teams are top notch and we aren’t. This really, really does remind me of 1998-USA football, 2 steps forward and three steps back.

Arena has won at every level and team he has managed. This will pass and the US will continue to raise their level of play internationally.

I’ve been to both US matches and nearly went hoarse in an attempt to get beasley motivated. As someone with the freshest legs in 2H game 2, the diva still crawled around the pitch in a fog. Note to Arena: play only those guys who have heart - bench DMB!
