Convey: we didn’t know what to do

June 15th, 2006 | By: Daryl | 21 Comments »

Bobby Convey had an interesting response when asked to explain Monday’s disaster.

“I think the reason why we didn’t do well is because everyone did not do their role, maybe didn’t know their role, maybe didn’t know what to do,” he said.

Judging by the ease with which we gave up possession, and the general lack of direction when going forward, it’s difficult to disagree with Convey’s assessment. Will have to take issue with his lexicon though. Not sure what they’ve been teaching him in Reading, but that sentence barely qualifies as English.

I think what we US Soccer fans can do right now is hope for the best.

Convey may not be the most eloquent speaker out of all our players. I just watched the June 14th version of ussoccer.com’s Studio 90 where they interview Mooch (assistant coach Glenn Myernick)–when asked about who the danger men were for Italy, he says: Nesta, Cannavaro, Pirlo, Toni, and Gilardino. I hope the US coaching staff has also heard of one Francesco Totti… Good grief!

Totti’s possibly out, which is why he wouldn’t be a danger to us. Besides that, he wasn’t the biggest threat to Ghana in their match after coming off that engthy layoff.

How pathetic was Convey’s statements!!

“bwaaa!, bwaaaaa!!! we couldn’t find our shoulder pads, helmets and pigskins in the dressing room, that damn ball they gave us was ALL ROUND!, the referee only allowed KK grab the ball with his hands and he didn’t allow to the rest of us… it was sooooo frustrating!!! bwaaaaa!!!”

P.S prediction time and don’t forget my words!

Italy 3 USA 0
Ghana 3 USA 0

Convey’s comments seem to be a real indictment against Arena. Most people credit Arena as being one of the best match day managers, getting his team tactically prepared to play.

While we sometimes (often) found ourselves deficient in skill, we were always in the correct position or formation. It was usually the touch on the ball or the finishing that was lacking.

If Convey is right, then one has to wonder whether or not Arena’s strategy of keeping tactics (including the starting XI) so close to his chest is starting to wear thin. The US players are not longer happy just to be included in the squad. They want to be, and expect to be starters. And, it is important that they are not kept in the dark as to their roles during training.

USA rejoice at the fact that the boyz are not dead last [yet], only SECOND TO LAST! in the official FIFA stats USA stands ahead of Ukrania by one goal, that should make Aren and his kids very proud and relieved / [even Costa Rica and Trinidad & Tobago are ahead]

Maybe landon donovan should switch sports to say… curling? snowboard? synchronized swiming??
[or a potentially succesful future career in public & motivational speaking in middle schools all across USA?]

P.S I never realized how much I would enjoy landon donova’s pathetic failure and shame in this cup all because of his big mouth and ego.

;)

I think it is time that Reyna passes the captains arm band to someone that will make an impact. I can not remember a game that he dominated. Let’s see Dempsey and Olsen out there.

I’d like to see Johnson play the full 90 minutes!

Considering how the majority of people in the USA don’t care about soccer, you have to give credit to our team, especially last world cup. Imagine if it were as popular as football (NFL), we’d have a kickass team.

I can still see a slight win against Italy!

ouchouch, at the risk of responding to a troll and all that doing so entails, I have a different prediction for you:

Italy 0 - USA 1
Ghana 0 - USA 2

And the US will only give up one other goal throughout the tournament. Possibly against Brazil or Germany?

Your predictions are optimistic to say the least. To even draw with Italy is a big asking- but isn’t impossible.

With that said, Bruce must employ an attack-minded formation and use players with attacking flair. I think we showed use the formation we got our asses kicked with (The Czechs). That is, 4 defenders, a holding midfielder, 3 attacking mids and two strikers. That is what we must use if we want to get anything from this game. Gentlemen, we MUST win the next two games. And the only way to do that is by scoring. 4 points isn’t enough at this point, because from the way I see it, we won’t qualify based on goal difference. Do you understand this? The Italian game is a must win one. With that said, we should go with the suggested formation and not let up attack for a good 45 minutes.

We can only hope at this point. I pray that McBride and Johnson start, with Dempsey, Reyna and Convey as attacking mids and Mastroeni as the anchor. If not we can use a 3-5-2 (which surpisingly is where we get our most results). It would looks something like this:

———-Keller——–

Pope——Onyewu——Bocanegra

——-Reyna—Mastro——-

Dempsey—Donovan——Convey

——Johnson—McBride——

Bruce Arena was being tentative to a fault. He was scared, and uninventive. That was clearly a game he had no ambition of winning. But with a more attack-minded formation like the one above, I think we’ll have a chance to get 3 points. But the most of important thing is that our players show determination. They can look towards to the Soca Warriors if they are unfamiliar with the concept.

Ouch Ouch,

Why are you such a douchebag? I’ve been on many threads and every time I see you write something its consists only of the belittlement of US soccer. You never have anything constructive to say and always finish your post with an attack on Landon Donovan. You seem to think he is arrogant because he said once that his goal is to win the World Cup. That is every team’s goal. If it’s not then you don’t deserve to play in the tournament because you won’t be playing with the necessary passion. If I recall, every other interview I’ve ever seen him do he has downplayed the high expectations and suggestions by the interviewer that the US should one better its 2002 showing, even saying that they would be lucky to make it out of their group. Since you cannot be an American fan and come onto the messgae boards soley to rag on the US, why don’t you just take your bitterness somewhere else. Even your tag name is a joke… you think your mindless attacks will illict “ouchs” from people who read them when all they are thinking is how much of a fool you are.

I agree with Jeff and GB, ouchouch, shut the f*^k up. You must be French. Your comments arent the only thing that portray your stupidity and ignorance, your grammar sucks. If you cant write correctly while bashing the USA then shut your damn mouth. Besides, we may not be the best at soccer but we have so many more strengths than some of these other countries, things they only dream of.
The USA will beat Italy and Ghana. Now, whether they can beat Brasil, thats another story for another day.

Bidemi-

I definitely like the 3-5-2 formation. The US does not quite have the strikers for a 4-3-3, thus a 3-5-2 is a good idea.

That being said, if JOB was healthy, would you put him on in place of Pablo?

Also, is Bocanegra fast enough? I know Lewis messed up last game, but a 3 man backline has to be really quick. I’m not sure Bocanegra has the wheels…

USA does have world class players! They may not be known to many US supporters? Look at some of the clubs they play with, excellent European clubs!
What’s lacking is passion!
Okay, so I am a woman! Also,
there is no unity among the team, its every man for his own out on the pitch and we will never will with that attitude.
