DaMarcus Beasley has reacted badly to Arena’s quote that we “got nothing” out of him, saying:

“I was back there defending the whole time, I don’t know what [Arena] wants me to do… I was always defending the whole time. That’s how the game went. Next time I will leave the guy and play as a striker instead of a midfielder and then we’ll see what happens.

DMB did do a lot of defending today, but that’s no excuse for being unable to control a football. He’s been out of form for far too long, and maybe his complainy-pants attitude isn’t helping. Sounds like he’s getting bitter as opposed to knuckling down.

This isn’t the first time he’s said something detrimental to team spirit, and undermined Arena. Even this week, he was complaining about not knowing the starting eleven, which was pretty cheeky as he hadn’t played well enough to be in it.

We can all sympathise with him playing out of position on the right, but he’s been equally dreadful on the left for the last six months or more.

Time to bench DMB and give Clint Dempsey a go at right midfield?

Good for DMB standing up for himself and responding to his unprofessional coach’s team bashing, lets this become an example of how the US squad is going down the tubes from within.

The defecation has hit the rotating apparatus!

The U.S.A team did a mistake; playin’ the checs at wround level would be the best bet for any other team, but no for Brus Arenas, who never told his teem that the checs were tower, even toller than the U.S.A players. We will be whatching Ganna and Italy wining the checs “Why?” becouse they play the boll at wround levol all the time.

Beasley’s showing against the Czech’s is a sure proof that it’s time to give Dempsey the nod for starting at right mid. Dempsey has proved that he can beat mid-fielders, and supply the offense that the US needs to take on Italy. I’d go with the 3-5-2, with Dempsey, Donovan, Reyna, O’Brian, and Convey across the mid-field and McBride and Johnson up front

Hmm, bench him for his mouth, unless its more detrimental to the team. Right now the US needs to get back on their feet, get their heads in the right place, and play some real soccer, regardless of who is in the starting eleven. C’mon boys, pull yourselves together…

If DMB is so bad and not suitable for the right side, how come our wizard of a coach, Bruce Arena, had him in the starting lineup at that postion?

Bruce is picking the players and the formation…he is the one accountable and most responsible.

This loss is a direct reflection of our ODP feeder junior system, players that are super athletic like Beasley however they have zero soccer IQ.

Neither Arena nor DMB’s comments were seemly. DMB may be out of form and definitely frustrated, but Arena must take responsibility for fielding a “team” that can’t string 3 passes together and plays like they met at a local bar last week. Instead of the multiple lineups and formations used over the past 3 months, he should have picked a starting 4-4-2 and built some system consistency and player familiarity.

too slow, too hesitant…too “soft”…..

Unfortunately that really sums it up. I haven’t yelled at the tv that much since this past football season. When you’re considered the underdog, what do you have to lose?? Thats why I couldn’t believe we were so flat. Beasley should’ve never been on the right side, but man thats still no excuse for how badly he played. His first touch was horrible. McBride’s good, but he can’t create anything thats not put directly on his head or foot. I’d love to see Eddie J start against Italy. Donovan simply needs to go get the ball, and stop getting lost in the mid/forward spots. We constantly went backwards b/c they were easier passes, as opposed to man’ing up and taking control of the midfield. Well, playing on your heels and passively against a counter-strike team like that is gonna get your head kicked in every time.

Another thing that jumps out at you is we really don’t have a specific player to put us over the top. Soccer is a team sport, but you’ve still gotta have someone special out there to make somethign happen (ie. Czech’s had Koller, Nedved, whose ran around us like a bunch of kids at age 32 and semi-retired). The US has fed us Donovan and Beasley for the last 5+ years, and I just don’t see them getting any better. To me the best player yesterday was still Claudio Reyna. Thats something else crazy to me, b/c how has the US not produced another top flight center midfielder in the last 16 years. We need some new blood, even if they old isn’t all that old. If the “vets” aren’t gonna leave it all on the field, let the younger guys like Johnson and Dempsey have a shot, cause I’m very afraid this Cups already over for us. Here’s to leaving it all on the field against Italia.

I was at the game and got to watch DMB even when the camera was not on him. In my eyes, Arena’s words were the same words I would have used to describe his performance. He was less of a non-factor, he was a detriment to the team.

Yes he was being called on to take care of defense, but part of playing in defense is make the guy marking you do some work. DMB never did that. Any time he got the ball his first touch was either bad, or directly backwards in a negative way. The guy marking him didn’t have to do anything except appear in front of him and DMB would not attempt to pass him, make him work, or even change his mind.

If DMB had been more of an offensive force in the game, he would not have had to defend so much. That’s the way the game works. He’s supposed to be one of the US’s speed and skill players but his touch was woeful and his play was negative. I was surprised Arena left him in as long as he did when they obviously had to go for goals.

It’s too bad that both Arena and DMB have decided to take this public and provide grist for the media mill. This should have been sorted out long before the flight for Germany left. I hope they can salvage some pride against italy and Ghana.

Having just ripped through DMB I think it’s only fair Arean come in for his share too. The image of the match was after the US was 3 goals down the camera showed him on the big screen in the stadium. He was stretched out on the bench, hands behind his head. Obviously disgusted, as he should have been, but doing nothing to motivate his players. Maybe that’s not his style, but still, that image sends altogether the wrong message.

A few years from now we’ll all have a chuckle as tey do outtakes from the game and title it “while Bruce slept” when they show a goal and then Bruce sleeping on the bench.

I’ll make no friends here…McBride must sit out. EJ and Ching should get the nod. We’ve seen what Mcbride can’t do. THis isn’t his club team. It’s time to put some hungry young lions out on the pitch. Pull out DMB, put in Dempsey. Now you’ve changed the complexion of the team. Oh and somebody better pinch Gooch and make sure he’s awake during the game.

I agree with the ODP feeder program. US Soccer ODP feeds kids who can afford to play. Our top U17 goal scorer from California, was sent home after the frist week, because his economic background could not afford to have him stay. What does that tell you about this sport.

Football everywhere else in the world is about the best football athletes and kids with talent being gromed into football players. In the US, is is pay to play. How many of the USMNT come from a family whos total family income is below the Poverty level???

I think this team is in a bad way. When a coach makes some negative comments about a player, and the given player then responds badly to them, the squad is certainly on the brink of self-destruction. Even if a team is playing badly, you should not begin open warfare just because you didn’t get the result you thought you would.

It seems to me that everyone associated with the U.S. team is due for some harsh criticism. Arena for using a stupid formation with players out of their normal positions. I like Mcbride but against a team that is very good in the air it makes no sense — he would have been better off going with speed to counter the czech’s large back line. I am however, not discounting the lack of effort on the players part, there were too many times where no one took the initiative to go after loose balls. The czech’s were the first to the ball and made much more use of the space the US provided. The US never once used its speed advantage. While I did not think the U.S. would win the game, I did think it would be at least close, not a blow out.

I really don’t want a repeat of 98…

Also, Bruce tried a 4-3-3 several times during qualifying with poor results. The US just does not have the individual skill necessary to pull it off

I think a 3-5-2 would be a good call. An advantage to the 3-5-2 is that a 3 man backline makes it easier to work the offsides trap (which does make a difference). It also gives us support in the midfield where it is badly needed.

Wynalda & Lalas said Kasey Keller is the best goalkeeper in the world, its that stupid mentality that makes the rest of the world laugh at Team USA. Yes hes good but come get real the US does not have one player in a top team. The MLS is second rate and totally uncompetitive Landon Donavan could not make it in Europe. DCM is a poor sub in top football.

Obviously, the USA was not prepared to play, and the coach bears the ultimate blame for the team not being ready. DMB and LD should be benched - both played liked 3rd division wannabe’s. Instead of a 3-5-2 they should play a 6-2-2 because their midfield sucks and the defense needs all the help it can get!!!!!

Martin-

have you been following any of the posts? No serious soccer fan is watching the games on ESPN becase we know that Wynalda and Balboa are a JOKE.

Kasey Keller could not place a punt to save his life and is slower off his line than my grandma. The last time he came out and caught a cross was high school.

We all prefer Univision….

I loved Beasley 4 years ago, but I think the honeymoon is over. If you ask me, he should have been benched for whining about not knowing the formation ahead of time, knowing that that was one of Arena’s favorite tricks.

A new name- “Wrong Way Beasley”. Did this guy know which direction he was supposed to be attaking? Almost every pass was backwards. Time to sit him and put in a player who’s not afraid to go at people.
