Donovan Full Of Confidence

May 17th, 2006 | By: Daryl | 5 Comments »

Very confident quote from Donovan in this AP article. He recently rewatched the US-Germany 2002 quarterfinal and had this to say:

“We destroyed them. It wasn’t even close. I’d never seen it again, and you’d just think, oh, we had a few chances. We controlled them. That was very eye-opening, too, because we were a lot better than a team that finished in second place. That has to be inspiring. That has to be confidence-building. It says a lot about our team.”

I think that the attitude Donovan is what the whole US squad should have going into the world cup. He has always beleived in the US. I think whole US team should watch that Germany game just to boost their confidence.

I think it’s great for them to watch that match over and use it as motivation, but mouthing off about it to the media could backfire.

We don’t want to sound to arrogant and therefore motivate teams to “gun” for us.

Good point Wes about not being ‘too arrogant’

I am one big USMNT lover and can’t wait for the World Cup to start but I can’t “go there” with Landon on the Germany game in 2002. I have watched that match many times and while we certainly played with Germany step for step we did not “control” them and Landon missed two clear shots (or rather he had to go up against Oliver Kahn) including a break away one on one affair that we really needed. It was probably the best any USMNT has ever played, but as you know it wasn’t good enough (hand ball or not). We are going to have to have our A+ game to get out of our group. But we had our A+ game in 2002 for every match but Poland and that didn’t matter in the end. USA baby!

I like his attitude. I think it’s good for the players and fans. I don’t like a lot of the defeatism I keep hearing about the US being in a tough group and will be “lucky” to progress. I think we can all be confident and ready to win without being arrogant.
