Eddie Pope To Play Midfield? What?
Seems the Eddie Johnson/Taylor Twellman mix up was just the tip of the iceberg. Some brave soul at Yanks Abroad has scoured several European publications to see how well they know the US team, and found a multitude of errors.
Read the full article, or see below for edited highlights:
Marca (Spain): Eddie Johnson is a left back, Eddie Lewis is a striker. Both play for Bolton Wanderers.
Algemeen Dagblad (Holland): Kerry Zavagnin will start ahead of Claudio Reyna.
Daily Express (England): John O’Brien will play up front.
World Champions magazine (Italy): Predicted starting eleven has Freddy Adu up front, Steve Ralston partnering Reyna in the middle and Chris Armas on the right wing.
El Mundo (Spain): Greg Vanney to make the first eleven, Eddie Lewis up front, Eddie Pope in midfield.
Don Blaon (Spain): Eddie Pope to play right wing back, Chad Marshall is “the master of the area.”
BBC online: USA’s star man is Freddy Adu.
Destination Germany 2006: 3-2-2-1-2 formation for the USA with Bocanegra and Reyna twin shields in front of a back three and Lewis, whom they describe as a ’speedy left winger’ elsewhere, playing in the hole behind McBride and Josh Wolff.
World Cup 2006: a three man midfield of Armas on the right, Lewis in the middle and Zavagnin on the left.

Man, I hope the Czechs are as clueless as the Euro media is. They won’t know what to think of the situation. 3-2-2-2-1??? Awesome formation, with the “twin shields”. That actually doesn’t sound bad, maybe Eddie Johnson can be the “sword”??

I have been telling my cousins in Italy the key is to double team Adu (hoing the info gets back to the Italian National Team).

Great stuff. Even Four-Four-Two magazine got it wrong, labeling Josh Wolf a veteran winger of Everton and Bolton.
Love the campaign of disinformation. Let’s all keep this up…

I don’t know guys… Is this a deliberate campaign of disinformation – or just the world yawning at the US team the way people here yawn at soccer?
I wouldn’t expect any miracles this time around. A loss to Morocco, a 2-0 win over Venezuela, and 1-0 wins over Latvia and Angola… And now strong games against Italy, Czech Republic, and Ghana?
