Face/Off
Do you have trouble telling Eddie Johnson and Taylor Twellman apart? The London Times does.
They also describe Oguchi Onyewu as elegant. I kid you not.
Kudos to Jodido for spotting this.

Taylor is just Eddie’s brotha from another motha.

I read Johnny O’s profile and again not much said. Maybe it’s because he’s been injured so long, but it seems to me he gets no attention and is clearly the best player for the national team. Without him, the US will be forced to defend and counter and will probably not make it out of group play. With him, they will be a dangerous team due to his vision and passing that will make for attractive football the rest of the world will have to respect. Well, they still don’t respect us after our last showing so maybe that’s stretching it. But, the point is we will look like a good team that can hold the ball and make creative plays against the quality opponents we face which without him, I really don’t see happening.

In World Soccer magazine, they used DaMarcus Beasley’s picture for both his profile and Pope’s (just different pictures of DMB at different angles). LOL Our players need more recognition.

Why oh why do you have to call it the London Times? It existed before any other “Times”, including the dire New York Times, so let’s call it the Times, in the same way golf’s The Open is not called “The British Open”. We invited The Times before you. See you at the World Cup, where I’ll be laughing my pants off as you get annihilated by Ghana.

Andy,
We call it the London Times to distinguish it from the other Times.
Whether it’s the New York Times, The Irish Times, or the Times of India, every nation inevitably refers to theirs as “the Times”, so identifying the original as the London Times becomes necessary anywhere outside of England.
It might be annoying for English readers, but it needs to be that way for the sake of clarity.

Even though Europeans say they respect us, I still don’t think they do. I’m not saying Bruckner or Lippi will have Andy’s attitude (although I hope they are paying lip service by praising us).
There are a number of mistakes in those profiles. Some of the funniest:
Bocanegra’s, which begins, “One of the USA’s top stars.”
Dempsey’s. “Can spray the ball around at will but his main role is to break up the play rather than to be the creative spark”
O’Brien’s, which has no photo and has this high praise: “A versatile midfield player”.
I do think it will be very difficult for the US to advance from Group E. Watching these warmup games before the Cup has cemented that in my mind. The quality you see from other European team just isn’t there for Team USA. I believe Arena will do his best to prepare us, sure. But repeating our 2002 performance is a tall, tall order.

Andy,
You miss the point. The footballing commentary of your times is every bit as dire as the political commentary in ours. While you’re wanking to page 3 and laughing at our WC losses, we’ll be slowly and surely progressing, until - not so far in the future - we will live up to our FIFA ranking. Yes, ahead of old England. The path is well documented…
“First they ignore you, then they laugh at you, then they attack you… and then you win” - Gandhi.

[...] Seems the Eddie Johnson/Taylor Twellman mix up was just the tip of the iceberg. Some brave soul at Yanks Abroad has scoured several European publications to see how well they know the US team, and found a multitude of errors. [...]
