Gibbs Headed For EPL

May 8th, 2006 | By: Daryl | 8 Comments »

There’ll be another American in the English Premiership next season after Cory Gibbs agreed a deal with Charlton Athletic.

He was available on a free after a brief spell with ADO Den Haag, who also released John O’Brien recently. Seems someone at Den Haag is not a US Soccer fan.

Gibbs is essentially replacing Jonothan Spector at Charlton, with Spector set to return to Manchester United once his loan deal expires. Gibbs’ move is subject to a work permit but that shouldn’t be a problem, especially if he gets plenty playing time over the next couple of months. Good move for Charlton and good move for Gibbs.

This is good — with Reading (and maybe also Leeds or Watford?) going up, it’s almost to the point where the USA could field a pretty decent team from American EPL players. Perhaps a bit more respect from the Brits, then?

Very cool. It will be interesting to see what happens to some of the domestic based players after the World Cup. Will any end up in Europe, etc..

Great news for Gibbs, hope the move works out well for him.

Not a smart move my Gibbs at this point, in my opinion.

Why rush to sign so soon before Germany. I’d wait until after the WC, then sign. If he has a decent cup, he could probably get a much better deal than he signed.

Just a thought…

The strange thing is that current Charlton boss Alan Curbishly is quitting , so Gibbs has no idea who his coach will be next season.

Curbs wasn’t the draw. It was playing in the Prem.

Of course, and in this article Gibbs says he’s been talking to Richard Murray (Charlton chairman) not Curbs.

Definitley a great move for Gibbs, and I think he’s got what it takes to do well. I just think it’s a strange situation to be joining a club not knowing who your boss will be.

To be sure. But Murray has been a steady head to that ship, judging from his loyalty to Curbs. I’d feel more comfortable joining a club like that than, say, the mags.
