Guide To USA Player Nicknames

There was a bit of confusion on USA WCB this week.

We were debating DMB, and Euler from the excellent Brazil blog wanted to know exactly what the Dave Matthews Band had to do with the 2006 World Cup.

Brazilians know a thing or two about nicknames (Pele must be the most famous nickname of all time) so I figured if they could get confused, then anyone could.

Therefore, may I present the officially unofficial cut-out-and-keep (if you want to ruin your computer) guide to USA MNT nicknames.

1 Tim Howard “T-Ho” “Timmy Tourettes”
2 Chris Albright
3 Carlos Bocanegra “Los” “Boca”
4 Pablo Mastroeni “Mastro”
5 John O’Brien “JOB” “John O’Broken” “Johnny O”
6 Steve Cherundolo “Dolo”
7 Eddie Lewis “Lewbanger”(apparently)
8 Clint Dempsey “Deuce”
9 Eddie Johnson “EJ” “GAM”
10 Claudio Reyna “Captain America”
11 Brian Ching “Big Chingy” “Ka-Ching” “Cha-Ching” “Big Kahuna”
12 Gregg Berhalter “Beerholder”
13 Jimmy Conrad
14 Ben Olsen “Beninho” “Benny”
15 Bobby Convey “Backstreet”
16 Josh Wolff “Wolffey”
17 DaMarcus Beasley “DMB” “Run DMB” “Gumby” “Jitterbug” “DaMarcus Boozeley”
18 Kasey Keller “The Wall” “Special K”
19 Marcus Hahnemann “Boomer”
20 Brian McBride “McHead” “BMB” “Bake” “Yee-ha”
21 Landon Donovan “LD” “Lanny” “Landycakes” “Lando” “PrimaDonovan”
22 Oguchi Onyewu “Gooch”
23 Eddie Pope “His Holiness”
Bruce Arena “BA” “The Bruce” “Il Bruce”

If anyone has anything to add, let me know and help make this a comprehensive list.

    I thought Beasley was “Bones”.

And can I nominate Cory Gibbs’ nickname to be “The Gibber”?

  • adam

I’ve actually read some places where Tim Howard’s nickname in England is actually “Timmy Tourette.”

  • jb

Where does the il bruce come from? What’s il?

  • D

Some Fulham folks have taken to calling McBride: Yeeha McGod. Or just Yeeeeehhhaaaaa.

  • colin

jb–pronounce it like Italian. “eel bru-che”

wasn’t McBride called “Bake” at some point?

  • Mick

Great post! Donovan said in a recent chat on ESPN that he prefers the nickname primadonna to Lanny or Landycakes.

After Beasley’s recent DUI problem in the Netherlands, my good friend DF came up with the clever nickname DaMarcus Boozley, which I quite like. Fans will also recall that in our quarterfinal match against Germany in the ‘02 WC, Beasley attempted to discretely drain the weasel while stretching near the U.S. bench. This yielded the nicknames DaMarcus Peesley or DaMarcus Pissley.

And Colin is right that “Bake” is a nickname for McBride (apparently it’s Brian is called that by his teammates). As I recall, the origin of the nickname is that back in the late 70s/early 80s, there was a baseball player named Bake McBride.

I don’t know why the link to the Beasley pic in my comment above is not working. Try copying and pasting this link into your browser:

One more nickname for Beasley that should definitely be added is “Jitterbug.” That nickname dates at least as far back as his days with the US U-17 national team, as that’s what his teammates called him.

  • http://incadenza.typepad.com/soccer_thoughts/ Evan

    Donovan is LD or Lando.

  • Rick

I’ve wondered about GAM for EJ. Tried to look up the significance a few weeks ago but couldn’t find it. Anyone know?

  • daryl

GAM is an acronym for Grown-Ass Man, because he is.

  • Matt

    “Lewbanger”???

  • daryl

Yep, Lewbanger. I’d never heard it before either, but it’s on his profile at the pretty respectable ussoccerplayers.com.

Even better, it’s on some kid named Duke’s MySpace page. Eddie “Lewbanger” Lewis is apparently one of Duke’s heroes, along with a lot of other Leeds United players, so I’m guessing this is where the name comes from.

  • http://incadenza.typepad.com/soccer_thoughts/ Evan

Another one for Lewis–when he went to England, he was hyped as “the American David Beckham” by the media.

  • Juan

Landon Donavan looks exactly like Dave Matthews, for the record.

  • http://www.correira.com Dave

LD does look like Dave Matthews, or so my girlfriend has said for years.

  • james

yeah the upstanding young folks at United actually have a ditty for Tim:

“Timmy Tourrettes…Fuck That, Timmy Tourrettes… Fuck That”

And when they sing it they kind of move their head to the side in a quasi uncontrolled motion.

Its the kind of thing i could see laughing myself stupid to, but when it comes from ManScum I find it offensive.

And after The Bruce nomminating Ka-Ching, we know Ching has the pictures of Arena with the goat.

  • http://ecuador.worldcupblog.org/ Trent

Speaking of Lewbanger, sweet goal by him today for Leeds in the playoff against Preston North End.

  • Keoni

I’m gonna nominate Flyin’ Hawaiian for Brian Ching.

I think Corey Gibbs’s nickname is spider. Not really sure where I’ve heard that, but I have heard it before.

  • plashch

Ching should be The Big Kahuna.

  • footyor

    Charlie Blackmouth for Boca

  • footyor

Most of the guys don’t deserve nicknames. INHO is added to a player’s name who is extraordinary, and Olsen is not.

  • daryl

I think Beninho is semi-ironic, I wouldn’t take it too seriously.

  • Woolbanger

    Lewbanger = Little legend!

[...] There’s a definite groundswell of support for Bobby “Backstreet” Convey (that nickname’s been added to the list) to play in the first eleven come World Cup time. Whichever way you combine things, it looks like two out of three from Convey, Beasley and Dempsey. Despite Convey’s excellent form, I suspect he may find himself on the bench come June 12th. [...]

[...] I had the pleasure to talk with the gang from AOL Sportsbloggers Live on the eve of the World Cup. You can listen to the podcast here. In the interview we discussed the Peter Crouch robot dance, how Italy is practicing its flopping ahead of the World Cup, German dogs and United States players’ nicknames. We also talked a little bit about footy and the fact that people still listen to a band called Right Fred Said. No interview would be complete without the requisite mention of Brazilian women on video.
