Keller’s Dig At Friedel

June 11th, 2006 | By: Daryl | 6 Comments »

Kasey Keller isn’t prepared to put his rivalry with Brad Friedel to bed just yet. How about this for a quote about patriotism and playing in Europe:

“I’m an American. I played in England for 12 years. I don’t have some dodgy English accent, I’m still speaking with an American accent.”

I’d love to see Friedel’s face when he reads that.

Keller is right, Friedel does sound more English than American. And it is a dodgy accent. C’mon, lad, be true to your roots!

Go Kasey Keller, take USA all the way!

It’s ironic really, considering “dodgy” is English slang. I thought they were friends? I’d be willing to bet it was more of an inside joke between the two as opposed to being said with any malice.

Good point. So does that mean truth was in on the joke (”C’mon, lad”)?

My mother lived in Scotland for two years and came home with something of a Scottish accent (which still surfaces even though this has been more than 30 years ago). So it’s not at all surprising to me to hear someone who has lived in England for some years have an accent. It affects people differently.

I was going to mention the “dodgy” think, but I see you beat me to it!

You don’t know who Friedel is? I’m guessing you’re a newcomer to American soccer.

“Friedel” is actually Brad Friedel, arguably the best ‘keeper the US has produced. He had an outstanding tournament in the last World Cup, in which he saved 2 penalty kicks and was named to the World Cup All-Star team, along with Claudio Reyna. He retired last year from international soccer, which led to Kasey Keller being our number 1 this world cup. However, He still plays club soccer for Blackburn Rovers in England.

That link above should help.

I don’t know why Keller would take a cheap shot at Brad Friedel. The guy is an amazing goalkeeper. True, his accent does sound “dodgy”. I don’t know, maybe he was trying to fit in. Can you imagine Keller with a German accent after playing in the Bundesliga?
