More Transfers: The Return of Johann Smith / Gooch to PSG?
The transfer news and rumors came fast and furious today; let’s catch up on a few late additions to the pile.
First, the official. Former youth standout and Bolton reserves player Johann Smith has been signed by Toronto FC of the MLS. Johann was tipped to have a HUGE U-20 World Cup last summer, only to pick up a nasty injury just prior to the tournament, forcing him to pull out. The biggest benefactor of that spot opening up was Sal Zizzo, who went on to impress everyone in the U-20 World Cup and earned himself a contract to essentially be a seat cushion for German club Hannover 96. Ever since Johann has found it hard getting back on his feet, so this looks to be a good move for the youngster. His speed on that BMO Field turf could be a dangerous combo, let’s just hope it doesn’t lead to more injuries.
On the speculation side this afternoon, we find another Gooch rumor. This one stating that the leaders of the revolution at PSG are eyeing Gooch for their open CB spot vacated by the now retired French legend Lillian Thuram. They must work quickly though, as the French transfer deadline closes when the clock strikes midnight on the 17th. Let me be the first to say, Gooch, go to PSG. There is no point in holding out for Fulham to make some low-ball offer at the end of the window so you can toil with the goons of the lower premiership while having the strong possibility of playing second division ball next year. In addition, recent history has shown that Craven Cottage hasn’t been the nicest to the yanks of late, as Boca was exiled, Eddie Johnson left on the pine, and Dempsey is trying to pull himself out of a slow decline of playing time. Fulhamerica is not at the heights that it used to be. Don’t be fooled.
PSG, on the other hand, is a club on the rise. Fresh off signing Claude Makalele and Ludovic Guily, there is a rediscovered buzz about the club hoping to get back into European contention. Not only that, but the atmosphere PSG plays in every night is tremendous compared to most stadia in France. My gut feeling is that a move to PSG is a move forward for Gooch while a move to Fulham could be a move backwards in a year’s time. Plus, making a transfer to the French league is clearly the new transfer to Fulham (see Boca and Adu). We shall see how it plays out.
Where do you want Gooch to go? Happy to see Johann back in sight?
