Shoot Landon, Shoot

June 21st, 2006 | By: Daryl | 23 Comments »

Andrea Canales has come up with a novel way to end USA’s goal drought: shooting.

In this article she basically argues that Donovan needs to take more shots, rather than always looking to provide for others.

We’ve learned a lot at this world cup. Certain assumptions have been proven false, and others true. In this case, the key assumption was that Landon’s development has suffered by staying in MLS. True beyond question.

What’s with Landon’s moody attitude? He goes thru life these days like he has a walnut permanently inserted up his ass. When he was at San Jose he was a happy go lucky smart kid. Now he’s a moody, introspective excuse maker. Which Landon will turn up tomorrow??

I think we can all assume Landon has absolutely no future in Europe after his showing at this World Cup.

LD doesn’t want a future in Europe. He’s apparently very happy playing at home. If you consider Italy a strong side full of Europeans, you’re an idiot if you don’t think European fans and players didn’t notice the fact that LD ran circles around several Italians for 90+ minutes, including 43+ playing a man down. If he repeats that effort against Ghana, I’ll guarantee you there will be plenty of European teams who’d love to have him on the roster.

Yo he still has one game to go. He could play in the Premier now in my opinion on the right side for most teams (except Chelsea, Man U or Arsenal) definitely not in the center. You can see in his play he still lacks confidence and needs some real coaching in this area. You cannot deny this guys ability when he running at defenders.

Landon wouldn’t make it in Europe. He’s too moody to be tolerated on a real football team. Oh right, maybe he could be indulged like Ronaldo etc and join Real Madrid.

Can you imagine how Landon would react to Fergie’s hairdryer? He’d curl up into a ball in the corner and begin to gently sob.

Let me clarify. There’s no doubt Landon could play regularly in the EPL… would also agree that excludes the top tier teams. We didn’t need proof of that. What we got proof of is that his development suffered, which we’ve clearly seen in the first few games as he’s literally done that developing before our eyes. A subtle point, but crucial nonetheless, so I’ll argue it another way as well: if Landon played a year in the EPL before the cup he’s a different man against the Czech’s and the Italians in the first half…

One other assumption that has been proven true time and again on worldcup blog posts: US supporters are far more objective about their team and the place of the U.S. in world soccer than their detractors.

Gee, thanks for that Louie. I can’t fault a guy for wanting to live near his fiance and family. He’s never complained about not making enough money so why play 2000 miles away from home? Whatever, over half of continental europe’s players are HUGE primadonnas anyway.
As for the article, I think it’s very well written. Every US fan is looking for Landon to shoot more.

Is it just me or does this article have zero substance beyond a fawning admiration for Lando to score and live up to his hype?

I may be going over the line here but (dont say I didn’t warn you),…Do I smell wet panties?

Landon and others should attempt to rip it from just outside the box a few times a game to pull the defense out. With all of the drop passes it gets pretty crowded in the box.
oh and louie, nice job to la trina. they performed pretty badly in a mediocre group at best. they got a weak group end of story. i’m sure the US would take a group with el tri in it any day. 7 of the last 8 is some pretty serious ownage.

OFFSIDES - Walking the thin line. The true stat which coach Arena and USA Soccer Fans need to look at. I think we have had 1 off side call in 2 games. WE NEED MORE OFFSIDES. The difference between a great scoring opportunity and offsides is a split second. Offsides can be compared to goaltending in basketball- if timed right it may have been a blocked shot (scoring opportunity). A certain amount of offsides should eventually produce more scoring opportunities. So why aren’t we getting the offside calls ? Opposing defenses are playing well behind the ball and don’t respect our shot. Claudia Reyna shanked one last game with plenty of room in an unrushed position. IF we had 1 or 2 sharp shooters, opposing defenses would be on top of the ball and wouldn’t give us the space. We don’t, and until we can show the world we can bend the ball too, then the offsides will come.

I C Smith- great point about offsides.

The US needs to take more distance shots. However, Claudio’s in teh first game was spectacular, and Mastro’s in teh Italy game was only 6 inches off. We have the talent, we just need to shoot!

Also, offsides is more about players makin runs to get behind defenders. Unfortunately only Donovan and Johnson are any good at that. (And Johnson has barely played).

We definitely need to get more offsides calls, but a 4-5-1 will not cause it to happen…

Joe,

Do you really think that the reason that LAndon is not playing with the big boys is because he wants to stay home with his family.

HA HA HA HA..

so you are saying that if he had a team like barca offer him to play he would turn it down!!

you are crazy man.

Let me start over. donovan is a good player, don’t get me wrong. i think he could play in euope, BUT he wants to be a big boy right away. He wants to earn the big bucks. But he’s not THAT good. what he should have done is played in europ with crappy teams, play his heart out, then more teams would have interest.

for example, rafa marquez from mexico, he is a great example. He started out with crappy teams, but now plays with BARCA, a great team..

U.S. WILL NOT BE GOOD UNLESS YOU PLAY IN EUROPE.

Why do you think that the World is catching up in basketball. because the good players play HERE.. the same thing goes with soccer…
