The Evolution Will Not Be Televised

January 18th, 2006 | By: Daryl | 3 Comments »

The January 22nd friendly against Canada will not be televised. The US Soccer TV schedule was showing the broadcaster as ‘TBD’ but this has been ammended to ‘none’.

ESPN, who apparently own the rights, will bring us the State Farm U.S. Figure Skating Championship (Ladies Free Program) instead; a sharp reminder of soccer’s status in this county.

There’s an outside chance Arena will give Freddy Adu a run out in this game. It’s a massive if but it could happen. Since Canadian stations aren’t picking up the game either we could end up in a bizarre situation where there’s no footage of Freddy Adu’s international debut.

Typical nonsense in this country. Even though Canada is sending its “c” team and the US has the domestic players, we should be able to watch this somewhere but once again the US Soccer Federation has left us high and dry. Absolute garbage!

Sometimes I chat with americans about the World Cup. Never seen one interested. Watching movies and TV series, I know the sport is reaching some american people, but the majority of the US citizens seem to be eager to ignore this “outsider” sport. I would like to know why. Is it a reflex of the Bush mentality? A consious will to block notions from the rest of the world? I hope not.

There’s an excellent soccer-loving community in America and the sport is definitely on the rise here. The situation has been debated endlessly by soccer-lovers, but the main problem is that there are four other sports firmly established in the public consciousness. The USA v Canada game is a prime example as there’ll be a big NFL game happening at the same time.

I wouldn’t say there’s a deliberate effort to ignore soccer, I think that in most cases it just doesn’t register in the first place. On the other hand certain sports journalists (I’m looking at you Jim Rome) are openly hostile to the sport.
