The Situation Is This

June 22nd, 2006 | By: Daryl | 12 Comments »

Over on the main page, Bob has been busy calculating who needs what to happen today in Group E.

In Bob’s words, the situation is as follows:

“The United States needs a win over Ghana and a Czech Republic loss to Italy to advance. If the Czechs draw with Italy, the USA must win and make up the goal difference with the Czechs (currently +1 for the Czechs and -3 for USA). If the Czechs beat Italy and the USA beats Ghana, the Americans must make up the goal difference with Italy (currently +2 for Italy).”

the situation is a little simpler than that…

usa can guarantee passage by winning by 5 goals, though winning by 4 is probably enough.

the only realistic scenarios are:

italy and usa win
czech beats italy 2-0, usa win 3-0
czech and italy draw 0-0, usa win 4-0

We control our own destiny, in a way. If we win by 5 goals, we are in, no matter what happens in any other game.

Heh.

The following link breaks down all of the scenarios, right down to what would have to occur to prompt the mysterious drawing of lots.

We would only beat Ghana 5-0 in some obscene fantasy or twilight zone scenario. I am hoping to God that Italy beats the Czechs. I don’t want both European sides going through. I wouldn’t mind Italy-Ghana or Italy-USA going through. A Italy-Czech situation would just be devastating.

We tried to find an email address to Daryl to send him this, but we penned an open letter to Bruce Arena last night.

I’m not seeing the 5 goal US win as a guarantee, since our fate still depends on not only the outcome but the score of the Czech-Italy match. Since we’ve yet to score, looking at 5 goals today is something like planning on winning the lottery. Preparation and focus should be on winning the match, that’s all we can try and control. The rest will have to take care of itself. It’s a shame both matches are at the same time, I’d really like to follow both since they both have meaning for advancment of all teams. THIS is how the group stages should finish, with things in play for all sides concerned.

The five-goal win was stated tongue-in-cheek. It is true, though, that if we win by five, it doesn’t matter what happens in the other game.

Well Australia just made it through to the last 16 courtesy of our hard fought draw against Croatia.

As the game drew to its climactic finish, I remembered the comments by US Team Manager Bruce Arena following Australia’s qualification for the finals.

Good old Bruce described Australia as World Cup Easybeats.

Well Bruce, perhaps you’d better look to your own camp. Further, perhaps yuo’d better start looking for a new job.
