USA Loss Was Ratings Winner

June 15th, 2006 | By: Daryl | 48 Comments »

Monday’s game received a 2.4 cable rating, which is good apparently. The game was ESPN2’s highest rated show of 2006 so far.

The bad news is that many of these viewers will have been the “soccer-curious”, lured in by a 5th in the world ranking, the “best USA team in history”, “possible semi-finalists” (according to Eric Wynalda anyway) and all that.

With such a poor US performance, and a not very thrilling game, it’s possible these viewers may never return. Once bitten, twice shy.

it’s funny how when a team does not play well, everybody and their mama has an opinion on what’s wrong and how to fix it (same thing in politics — everybody has an opinion with what’s wrong with any given country’s government and how to fix it). So i’ll add my opinion — the U.S. just needs more practice and more practice with tougher teams. U.S. should also not expect an overnight success. Brazil and Argentina did not become Brazil and Argentina over 3 or 4 or 5 world cups.

A coaching change isn’t going to fix the problems with the US team, what we need is more players with experience playing in Europe. Landon Donovan is one of the USA’s best and isn’t playing in Europe despite trying twice. If even someone we consider one of our best isn’t fit for a top European club, how can we expect to compete in the World Cup?

I thought it was rather curious how critical the commentators were - particularly Foudy - of the minority players on the American side. Beasley is playing out of position. He has 12 goals in 58 games played whereas Convey has ONE in 39 games. Arena chose to play Beasley on the right when he is a better fit on the left. Seems to me players should be positioned where they’re most comfortable and have the most experience as opposed to where the coach may think “they will best help the team.” Foudy was especially critical of Oguchi something I thought was out of line.

Foudy also chuckled outloud when Dave Rebsen mentioned that Lionel Messi suffered from some type of growth deformity when he was a child. Truly uncalled for. Although, I must admit, I enjoy looking at that nasty mole on the side of her head.

Americans thrives in scandalous cheap TV, want some rating?? let them turn into the mediocre ESPN2 to watch them lose 0-3 [at least] vs Italia, and then again vs Ghana

what we need in the U.S. is to stop paying attention to soccer, one of the most boring games ever devised by man. You know, whether or not the U.S. won or lost, the ratings would still suck. And though a 2.4 rating is decent for cable, think about this for a second - the National Spelling Bee, compared to the 2.14 million households that supposedly watched this boring soccer game in the U.S., ended up with 5.8 million households watching. Know what that means? That in the U.S., the freakin’ spelling bee will draw more than twice the audience of a retarded World Cup game. Know what that spells? The eternal DOOM of soccer in the U.S. Good riddance.

It doesn’t matter how many goals Beasly scored before, the truth was, almost everytime he touched the ball during said game, he lost it. Convey tried to take on players and actually got off a few crosses. They weren’t great, but he was trying to be creative. I love Oguchi and Beasly, but Oguchi made several mistakes and both of them deserved criticism, just not publicly by the coach.

You’re all wrong, the US is still alive, they just need to focus and stop reading the poor comments on this blog about their last performance and listen to their assistant coach, cause obviously Arena has taken the media’s side about what a poor will and performance his team had during their first game. What a piece of &*#$@.

GO USA!!! Let’s kick some Italian tail!

I hope the U.S. does well because soccer (real football :P)is a better sport than American Football, and hopefully a good performance this year will encourage more top athletes to consider going into soccer.

S.O.S=same old you know what from the u.s. They think they are the best in all things. They are dreamers. And they have not played Italy and Ghana. The worst may yet come to them. Their attitude,coach-wise,player-wise and fan-wise leaves much to be desired. Viva Brasil.

weird times im a german in america watchin the spanish channel because i refuse to listen to american medias aversion to a sport that strives on peace, fair play, things this world needs more of. the blatant censoring drives me nuts! they covered none of the opening ceramonies, conveniently waited for the opening whistle to start coverage. at least univision has covered all of the team anthems. they even put a 5 second delay on the mexico/iran game. and the nail in the coffin, the announcer(american media) was bosting about john mccain trying to get iran barred from this world cup. it makes me want to pull my hair out!!! anyway, mr. arena: in a word-retire. ive seen this core group play and they can compete at this level they have the fire but your like a wet blanket. i think i will never forget you sittin on the bench with your hands behind your head, just pathetic. oh ya demarcus, you werent that good at the plex-prove me wrong. and one more thing, if you want to win take the damn shot, even if you miss youll get everyone fired-up. they actually tried that with 5 min left in the first game. want to win shoot, shoot, shoot!
on the edge,
diet

dino,

The World Cup is about dreaming. Does every country not dream about winning the World Cup? Yeah, we’re dreamers. We have been since the beginning. Sometimes dreams come true and you gain your independence only to become one of the most powerful nations in the world in less than 2 centuries, while leaving behind other countries that have been there for over 10. Yeah we’re dreamers.. We can’t win everything but it doesn’t mean we won’t try. Where’s Canada? Oh yeah, not in the World Cup. Take a nap and have a dream about South Africa in 4 years.

The U.S.’s loss will not hurt ratings at all. That game was on a Monday at noon against the Czech Republic. A large percentage of the audience were undoubtedly diehard soccer fans. Someone who isn’t a big soccer fan wouldn’t call in sick to watch the game. This next game will be on Saturday on ABC, as was mentioned above. The same people who watched Monday will be watching, plus many more.

dont feed the trolls.

the ratings are a good sign for soccer: increased media and public scrutiny will hold players and coaches more accountable for their performances.

it also shows a significantly increased interest in teh sport.

hey, maybe it’s just me, but i don’t really care about the announcers–i almost don’t even hear them (maybe i’ve just learned to tune them out). probably, i just have extremely low expectations, but i’m thrilled that every single match is televised live. i think the loss won’t affect ratings for this saturday and i think we’ll be suprised by the US team–they have nothing left to lose but pride itself.

jericoone: I agree, soccer is a THINKING man’s game. Definitely not for you. Are you trying to prevent Americans from watching the soccer they love, buddy? Control issues, friend? It’s still a free country. Soccer rocks!

jib,

dont feed the trolls.

Actually I think it’d be funny to get the “USA sucks, you don’t know anything about football!” trolls against the “Soccer sucks, what a sissy sport!” trolls. But it probably wouldn’t make for a great blog thread.

It was a devastating loss. I will be watching closely as far as our game against Italy. I think we can pull out an upset. I think soccer would be more interesting if they allowed fights…hahaha

Let ‘em go UFC if they get pissed off! And US fans should be able to kick european asses as well, especially the French! Anarchy!!!

Cheers!!!

It makes me laugh to read that espn had the biggest rating this year with the World Cup. ESPN must have some crappy numbers if the WORLD CUP only brought in 2.4
but then again they mostly show crap. Like 1 million lusy MLB games that past the first pitch I’m falling asleep, not to mention golf, tennis, bowling, fishing, marbles, jax, well you get the point. PLan old crap.
Then to not even show the national anthems of the countries
that are about to play. Lusy commentators that always down play the other teams.
But whats really funny is to think that they think that the USA team is ranked 5th in the world. FIFA scores teams by the wins the teams have but when you play against teams like Mexico, Canada, El Salvador, Panama, Costa Rica and so on your chances
of winning are greater then if you play lets say…..Italia, Spain, England, Germany, France,
well you get the picture. So FIFA
should stick there numbers up the wahzoo because they get stupid people to beleive in the tooth fairy.

It’s a shame the way the US Ghana game 2-1 ended the US teams chance at advancing into the next rounds in this years World Soccer Championship Match. I believe a lack of US sponsored suport i.e. Cable and TV news networks shows a complete ethnocentric bias on behalf of football, basketball and baseball egos. Soccer is international! Get your pea brains out of your US only minded focus people. Let’s start supporting the sport in schools and for all ages-its a much better sport for cohesive team building than any of the previously mentioned sports and the 2010 team deserves a boost in order to redeem ourselves amongst the rest of the entire world! Bruce Arena needs to go onto other things- lets get a European Coach and start focussing on fielding a younger more agressive team now–in order to blow the Europeans away in 2010. Its high time they stop saying the USA can’t play soccer and start saying WOW-were we ever wrong!
