USA v Czech Republic Today

June 12th, 2006 | By: Daryl | 73 Comments »

Today’s the day we find out if this USA team is really any good. Teamsheets are in and Arena has gone 4-5-1 with Donovan as attacking midfieler: Keller, Cherundolo, Onyewu, Pope, Lewis, Beasley, Reyna, Mastroeni, Convey, Donovan, McBride.

Convey has earned a spot at left mid, DMB will play wide right.

We’ll be LiveBlogging the action from around an hour before kick off (6pm World Cup Time, 12noon Eastern, 11am Central, 9am Pacific). If you’ve got a prediction or an opinion then feel free to leave a comment over there.

Sincere apologies to anyone who came here looking for the LiveBlog. The title has now been changed so as not to be so misleading.

There is a lot of bad news from this game.

First Taylor should’ve been on this team we got close to nothing from mcbride/wolff/johnson and what we did get was all from johnson. Second PM had no business starting, “hot hand” convey was brutally outclassed.

Bruce “the genius” Arena is about to learn something about sports in America. When you make moves and win your a genius. When you make changes/moves and you get hammered 3-0 your the opposite of a genius which is what the papers will be saying tomorrow morning.

Are the changes that need to be made that obvious to everyone else?

Obviously Taylor not being on the team can’t be fixed.

however, moving DMB back to his normal side and trying dempsy is a logical change. Getting mcbride out if he can’t run is a simple change. PM should watch the entire match from the side. I think leaving TT off the team is the big mistake though I realized he struggled a few games but other then that he’s played well for the past few years. When your down 2-0 at half and your bench options to help score are wolff/ching/johnson your in trouble.

Time to rebuild from this whole nightmare.

Drop the dead weight and boring approach to soccer.

List of things to bulldoze:

1.Players have tuned out Arena, and his boring approach and conservative tactics have been exposed.

2.Drop the old timers or coach’s favorites: Reyna, Keller, McBride, Wolf, O’brien.

3.Drop the littly ploy to not pick or play Mexican-American or Latin-American players. Clearly the US has more talent than what is showed rhat are currently playing soccer in leagues all over the US.

Luis,

You are just pissed that US is a much better team in Mexico, and much more experienced in the world than Mexico is.

That is why we kick Mexico’s ass 90% of the time we play them.
Also, we made the quarter final in the last world cup. USA has more players in Europe than Mexico does. IF Mexico was not in a group with Iran and Angola and not against the best ranked team in the world next to Brazil, I would see how much they would know about the world of soccer.

some notes:

1- a laughable effort, nearly all around. a disgrace.
2- it wont be worse against italy, at least after they score they sit back.
3-pope and mastroeni do not have the speed or reflexes to play at this level.
4-arena made some very poor choices. the worst being to demand lewis play an attacking role and push convey into the middle. if you are going to demand that role from lewis than, yes, bring convey off the pitch, get beasley to his good side and give dempsey a go who will at least earn some free kicks for you.
5-secondly, you do not take out the only guy who can cross the ball from the right flank in the second half who has experience playing in the bundesliga. you take out the slow guy from Real Salt Lake who couldnt man mark on the first goal.
6-the only bright spot in the game was beasley’s manner of tracking back. very professional, very well done. but cannot play on the right.
7-the loss of Gibbs was more serious than people anticipated.
8-donovan needs to demand the ball, he just come and get it loke rocisky.
9-people who call for Taylor Twellman are morons.
10-people who demand that reyna and mcBride and keller to be dropped are equally moronic.
11-this loss must be credited to Arena, who needs to come back with a win vs. Italy plain and simple.

I like how a lot of American soccer fans talk about how they root for Mexico because they’re our neighbors and our brothers and sisters. I’ve always wondered if there are Mexicans who root for America to win. Of course I know the answer. They want us to lose so they can laugh at us. Luis is typical of such sentiment. Have fun today but Mexico will become a pinata against Portugal.

Good luck on your next cut-out day from school to protest or just smoke weed.

Mr. George Washington Carver,

People like you make me ashamed of being an American. Learn to hold your nose around Louis types and keep your ridiculously short-sighted mouth shut.

I agree, a comment made in very poor taste.

Let’s keep it simple and soccer related: Mexico, I root for you because I want to see our Concacaf brethren do well.

BUT, you have hosted the World Cup twice and still have never made it to the quarterfinals. Until you do, shut up.

The problem with American soccer are idiots like George Washington Carver and mika.

They try to mask insecurities by blaming everything on Mexico, Mexican fans and or anybody else, fill in the blank.

There are 300 million people in this great nation but somehow the best eleven can’t get on the field together because of grudges and politics.

Here is what needs to happen:

1) Johnson starts.

2) Find someone to replace Pope, please. Maybe a three person backline?

3) Move Beasley back to his preferred side.

Here is an ideal formation, based on today:

McBride (He did not get service and cannot be blamed) and Johnson up top

Beasley on the left, Donovan as attacking mid, and Dempsey on the right

Reyna and O’brien as holding midfielders

Lewis, Gooch, and Cherundolo as the backline.

However, we should NOT overreact to this match. The Czech’s did place THIRD at the Euro 2004 and are one of the most talented squads in the world.

In all honesty, they did not totally demolish us, but did have a fanastic conversion rate which was the product of some great team play.

That being said, no formation can make up for the uninspired play of the US team. We got down a goal and gave us: resilience is CRUCIAL at the highest level. We were beat to most loose balls, our tackles were late, and we dove way too much.

Its been said that coaches have a short shelf life because the same tricks don’t work twice…maybe Bruce isn’t able to light a spark under player’s asses like he used to?

I also think he has been too loyal to certain players (Ahem, Eddie Pope, ahem)

Also, let’s be realistic about 2002.

The first game against Portugal we barely won 3-2 and 2 of those goals were flukes (O’Briens was from a mistake and Donovan’s was really an own goal). The second game we scored against the run of play. The third game we were demolished.

Our end record was 2-1-2.

Think about it: is 2-1-2 a good reason to get so hyped up?

Also, we need to play REALY FRIENDLIES against top flight teams. No more Norway and Venezuela B/C teams.

In the run up to 2002, we lost our warm up games but played against the upper echelon of the world’s footballing talent.

Bruce’s scheduling was TERRIBLE: we played one real game and that was with our MLS reserves.

The fact of the matter is: if we want to be a good team, the Gold Cup and Concacaf will not suffice. We need to try to play in teh Copa America and to organize friendlies against better competition.

Just look at Argentina: they played against Croatia and England, losing both games, but learned and had a great opening game against the Ivory Coast.

Also, it would help if Donovan would go to Europe. I’m glad he’s had fun prancin around LA and winning the MLS cup, but come on. His fiancee’s acting career is a LAUGHING STOCK.

We need a post about how bad Dave O’Brien is. That made a painful experience much more painful.

Talk about negative - I think he was trying to be a buzzkill. Worse, it was like he took every possible bad fact (or even opinion) and was determined to share it with the ordinary Americans tuning in for the first time.

Bench O’Brien in the booth.
