I like Arena, but I don’t like to listen to Arena. Spare us. Every time I hear him speak, I just think he sounds ignorant. I think he benefitted greatly from the establishment of MLS. That’s not to say he isn’t good. All the players talk about how he raised the bar and brought professionalism to the national team and the federation. Just don’t make us listen to him.

As far as O’Brien, I think he acquitted himself reasonably well. I’d rather listen to JP Dellacamara, but Dave was decent. It was the torture of Marcelo’s commentary that I couldn’t stand. Terrible. Give me Harkes, Wynalda, or even Fraser (who was actually surprisingly good) any day of the week.

I think Arena’s too good a coach and too good a resource for US soccer to let him spend much time in the press booth. But if it’s a choice between Bruce Arena and Dave O’Brien, I’d way rather hear Arena. I’d rather hear him clip his toenails.

Scanlan’s probably just covering ABC/ESPN’s (his?) ass for picking a bunch of lousy commentators for the World Cup; I’m hoping that, given pretty solid ratings for the Cup, ESPN will be more willing to treat soccer like a real sport for the next Cup and hire only announcers who understand the game. And to hire only commentators who can a) form a sentence and b) offer analysis. By the end of the Cup, I was ready to throw things every time I heard Marcelo Balboa say, “That’s much better. They want to kick the ball around a little here.”

Good ridance to Bruce Arena.

I’m just worried that U.S. Soccer is going to re-hire Steve Sampson, that moron who trashed the US Team in the 98 Cup.

Look, I know the US is nowhere even near the Fab Four, Brazil, Germany, Argentina and of course Italia. But we deserve a good coach none-the-less.

My # 1 choice is for Jurgen Klingsman! He is a neighbor of mine, living here in Huntington Beach, California.

I hope his kids can pressure him to coach the US. That would be awesome!!!

Will the next coach be a 2 year coach (’08 to ‘10) or a 4 year coach. 4 is better but Klinsmann might only want to do the last 2 years as he did with Deutchland.
