What Should USA Hope For From Italy - Ghana?

June 12th, 2006 | By: Daryl | 28 Comments »

Maybe Italy and Ghana can cheer us all up.

What would be a good result in the Italy - Ghana games for USA fans?

I’d quite like to see a draw, to keep both teams in touching distance.

A good result would be for Ghana and Italy to get kicked out of the tournament. That’s the only way that we could advance out of the group stage…

Tie. I just want to see the U.S. Team play like our soldiers fight in the war… with heart, pride, and sense of country. I want to see them win every ball as if their lives depended on it. If they play as if their lives are on the line, we’ll see an entirely different U.S. squad.

The US should hope that both Ghana and Italy have not changed their watches to local time and don’t show up. That may be our only hope.

Unfortunately we need to play with more and better defenders and counter with speed up the flanks with Donovan on the right and either Lewis or Convey on the left. Beasley was just too aweful to get back on the field against Italy. 5 in the back with Gooch, Conrad, Boca, Cherund, and probably Berhalter (Pope sucked and may be injured). Reyna and Obrien holding in the middle and Johnson up top. Keep the Italians at 0 and hope we can get one to steal the match and give us a chance to move out of the Group with a result against Ghana.

The US will lose every game. The talent just is not there.

The talent just is not there for this US team. They can’t beat any of the teams in their group. We must start preparing for South Africa and make players like Adu and Eddie Johnson move on the Europe.

Tough to accept but we’re the 4th team in this group, for some reason it was assumed to be Ghana.

What I want from this team is some heart, a one goal loss against Italy and at least one point in the standings against Ghana.

i am a romanian that lives in the USA. i love USA with all my heart and i wish that our team will have the power, the talent and the inspiration to shock Italy instead. we’ve all seen that Italy’s in good shape and Ghana has a lot of talent, too, but never underestimate an injured american soldier ! i really, really believe that saturday we’ll see a different Team USA against Italy - boys, you have to play every second of that game like you’re lives depends on it - Go USA !

MacPhearson,

Damn, you’re right: “a whole different squad” - like most of it suspended through red cards. You’d take it for most pathetic post of the tournament - and we’re barely halfway through the group stage - if it weren’t so cretinous. (And whose soldiers are you talking about, by the way? Certainly not mine. They don’t belong to me and they’re not doing my bidding. And don’t bother posting the patriotic, like-it-or-leave it drivel, it’s worth a lot less than you might think.)

This isn’t about war - where people, innocent and not-so-innocent, including your soldiers, die horrible and unimaginable deaths - it’s about football. So, what Reyna, Donovan, Beasley et al need to do is attack, yes, by going to goal, and/or trying to find McBride. Got it? It’s about technique and tactics on GRASS, not in the mountains of Afghanistan. Meanwhile, corporal, grab a toothbrush and scrub the latrines. Until noon, EST, Saturday.

To beat a team like Ghana 2-0, Italy is more certain to qualify than the Czech! as someone already said it here, it seems USA’s best hope is to get 1 point out of 3 matches!

The team needs to step up to the plate so to speak. The forwards never too on anyone and the defense was guessing most of the day. The Czeck were brillant and moved the ball at will. The boys better pull up their jocks for Saturday, or they will get their asses handed to them again by the blues… Come on put Wolfe on the pitch he has all the speed you need to attack..The coach should be ashamed of not naming the starters before the day. This is not little league stuff…come on Bruce be the man and use your head….

We will lose both games. We are simply not good enough. I’m looking at about 5 to 1 against Italy and 3-2 against Ghana.

It looks like there’s no hope, but in football anything can happen. As we used to say there are days when the don’t want you no matter how good you are. You will know it’s not your day the moment you miss three or more clear chances that it is not going to be your day. Lets hope the next game aginst italy that the italians have one of those days as ghana had against them. I think football in this nation has come a long way, just give us few more years until we become on par level with the rest of the world and then we can start to critisize our team with all the negative comments I’ve heard so far all over. But, until then we better keep cool and realize our capabilties or we will end up with high blood presuure everytime the team loses.

Here’s an idea for Italy. We put Allen Iverson on the left flank, Jason Seahorne and Ricky Henderson as fullbacks and Randy Moss at goalie. That should solve the problem. The current “solution” comprised soft-suburban euro wannabe’s just ain’t gonna cut it.

Ricky Henderson!? Surely you mean someone else?

Never mind that soccer players are pretty much known to be better all-around athletes than ANYBODY else. None of those guys can run 12 miles with only one break while kicking a ball in 90 minutes. None of them.

The whole idea that other US athletes would automatically be good at football is insane. WHo are the best footballers ever? Let’s say Pele, Maradonna and George Best. All small. All compact. All bottled lightning and magic.

If the USA plays as badly as it did against the Czechs, then all the USA can expect from Italy is a loss and ditto with Ghana.

Looking at the entire team, Ghana is the best team in their group. In such tournaments as the World Cup, we dot not depend on individual talents or on past glories. Recall what Greece did to Checz in the last finals! USA is a better team even than Checz and so Ghana will be having a harder time in their next match. I however put in bet on Ghana because they have all reasons to qualify for the next round - they can’t let down Mother Africa.
