Who Should Partner McBride?

February 12th, 2006 | By: Daryl | 5 Comments »

Taylor Twellman might have four goals and two assists in his last two games, but that doesn’t mean he’s the ideal partner for Brian McBride. Given BA’s fondness for the big man / fast man combo, who will partner the Fulham forward when the World Cup starts?

My money’s on Eddie Johnson, or at least it would be if gambling was legal in my state.

Clint Mathis will make the Mohawk return come June…otherwise I go with Josh Wolff. Steady guy when he is healthy and has experience. Personally I like Conor Casey but he is still unproven internationally.

I dont really know enough about your players to comment but If it was me picking the side I would centainly try to pick more european league based players. The guys that are playing week in,week out agaist european teams will stand a far better chance of being successfull in the world cup.Im not saying that USA based players would struggle.Just that the home based players that do go to the world cup should be the up and comming youngsters.

I think it is really important that whoever pairs with Brian McBride be able to create his own shot. Eddie Johnson is a strong choice, but he will need to show well in the next few games. Josh Wolf is good, but he isn\\\’t really a break out player. I do not think that Clint Mathis is the guy. Although he may have the right profile for the spot, I haven\\\’t gotten the impression that he and Bruce always see eye to eye. The one thing the team will not need in this world cup is distractions. They will need to be unified and focused. We will see. I think any of these guys could be on the team, but I am not sure which one is the best choice.

I like edddie johnson to be the man up top. in response to andy from the uk, the u.s. really hasn’t sent many fwd’s over to europe yet. other than mcbride, i can’t think of one fwd who’s had success in europe anything like our midfielders.
our strength in germany looks to be in the midfield, if injuries don’t kick us in the nuts.

I think Taylor Twellman is the guy. We need someone who is hot at this point in time. Twellman has just finished leading his New England Revolution to the mls cup and recording 4 goals and a couple of assists in friendlies against Norway and Japan.
