Would Friedel Answer The Call?

March 11th, 2006 | By: Daryl | 4 Comments »

I’ve just seen Brad Friedel give a man of the match performance in Blackburn’s 2-0 win over Aston Villa, producing some magnificent saves. Villa’s Milan Baros will probably have nightmares about a big, bald monster with gloves tonight.

I know Friedel’s retired and Kasey Keller is number 1 and all that, but what would need to happen for Friedel to play this summer? If Keller’s injured, Bruce should have no trouble starting either Marcus Hahnemann or Tim Howard (I say Hahnemann) and Friedel wouldn’t come out of retirement just to collect splinters in June and July. But if 2 of the 3 keepers were injured, do we really want an MLS keeper wearing the reserve gloves?I’d rather Friedel were recalled and given the no.1 jersey.

Sounds great, but to avoid a whole lot of controversy and chemistry-destroying karma, Keller would have to be on life support or have 2 or less working limbs before the team would accept Brad.

That being said, I’m sure that Arena and Friedel know that Brad is simply a phone call away.

The way Friedel has been playing, in the matches I’ve seen recently including the Cup semi vs. Man United, in the Villa match and in the Arsenal match the week before, and the Sunderland match the week before tht, he is really in great form right now.

Plus, he is from Mars and that’s always helpful playing in Germany. I would LOVE to see Brad as the #1 in June. Alas I think it is probably not going to happen.

It’s pretty well understood that Friedel was the #1 in 2002 based on form alone. Any other year since about 97 Keller has been the first choice keeper. Friedel stepping aside allows Arena to reward Keller with the #1 job for this WC. The really isn’t much difference in quality between to two, and I’m more than confident in Keller’s ability. If Friedel were to go to Germany, I think it would clearly be as a backup.

Friedel is one of the best keepers in the world. He should be on the World cup Squad. I think he is better than Keller. Friedel’s form has outstanding this season and he is one of reasons Blackburn is having a great season!
