Monday News Nuggets: Everybody wants something edition

-Kenny Cooper is officially on his way to the 2.Bundesliga’s 1860 Munich. While it’s nice to see him giving Europe another try, you have to wonder whether this will help/hurt his US MNT prospects. Given Bob and Sunil’s MLS bias, this could just strengthen Conor Casey’s spot (*shudders*). [SI (warning: written by Greg Lalas)]
-DaMarcus Beasley wants more playing time with Rangers. When he told them this, I imagine they began their response by saying, “Yeah, about that…” [Soccernet]
-Freddy Adu wants a move to the Eredivisie. Anywhere in the Eredivisie. He also calls Benfica out on not wanting him anymore. [Goal]
-Pretty much the closest Landy will ever get to being a member of Barcelona. [ONTD]

Jozy on loan to Hull City seems to be going down today. In the starting XI for an EPL team would be absolutely huge for Jozy…I know some people have reservations about Hull City’s manager but I think this would be a great situation or Jozy for a year.

Agreed, GS — official announcement is supposed to go down tomorrow.

@SP and GS
Guys, many a young US players go abroad and get nothing. He was promised playing time from the coach at Benefica when he went over there. The coach was fired before he was even able to get there and play.
If that coach was not fired would we still be having this discussion? He went on loan to Monaco. Is it his attitude? His size? Many coaches don’t want to put a 19 yr old out there. 19 YEARS OLD! There aren’t many who get the nod at 19 as far as I know. Most who do are Brazilian!!!
So he went to Benefica where fate was not kind in the firing of his coach. The 2nd coach wanted to take the team in a different direction and not have and 18 YEAR be in his starting group at one of the most storied Portuguese clubs. Then he was loaned to Monaco where many a great players have played.
The only problem Freddy had IMO is that he wanted a top flight club to begin his career. That is all. If he had started in the Swiss, Belgian, 2nd tier (not division) french, portuguese or dutch teams I think he probably would’ve played more.
Bob Bradley said he wants his players to be playing before they earn a spot in the starting 11 of the USMN A Team.
It can easily be seen from my vantage point. How many professional athletes have you known in your life? Give me a break. You guys talk as if you know. You don’t…all speculation. Let’s see if he can get on the field before we start speculating about rubbish. He is only 20.

Also, Freddy had moments but he looked very rusty in some of his games. It looks like he is losing the fire b.c he isn’t out there day to day.
I think his sights were set too high. And the Benefica coach specifically recruited Freddy after the U-20 world cup in Canada. Google that if you think it is speculative.

i didn’t mean to imply that what you said is speculative, i meant to imply that what benfica’s old coach was doing was speculating (no real manager automatically pencils a new player for starting time before he joins the club). also, i highly agree with what you say about the fact that a 19 yo won’t get much playing time with clubs like benfica and monaco.
but i also think the personality thing stands because its not just him getting no playing time, it seems like he is unwanted at both clubs, and considering he hasn’t gotten a single minute with the real senior squad in a long time, it looks like he is unwanted there too.

Unbelievable…why would you copy and paste the same exact post and put it here too? Neither SP or I said anything about Freddy on this thread. I’m not sure how old you are but you obviously don’t have much experience with blogs/message boards etc…the point of them is to speculate and discuss. No need to freak out when somebody says something you don’t agree with.
Anyways, yay for Jozy?

@GS. I copied the post b.c I wasn’t sure you guys would review it and I believe a reply was in order. Plain and simple. Don’t start reading into things again.
I am simply stating the case that there are other, more overriding issues as to why Freddy doesn’t play than his personality. It might have a factor but I am fairly confident that his desire to transfer to these top tier clubs was a mistake and I think he is realizing that. He needs to go to a mediocre team in a good league and go from there.

ok, let’s put it like this. freddy adu has heard that he is the american soccer savior since he was 14. he got super hyped and marketed to the point where i think he is a little out of touch with reality, which i would probably be even more so if i were in his shoes. i think that out-of-touch aspect caused him to go to teams where he wouldn’t realistically get playing time, but he probably thought he would easily bc of everything he hears about himself (i’m not saying he probably has an ego, but it’s hard not to view yourself as really good when everyone has been saying it for the last 5-6 years). that covers unbelievable’s argument (or at least i hope it does). i think that same attribute would probably show itself in training and meetings with the coach and other stuff, which is probably where the cancerous attribute that gs refers to comes in (after all, he seems to get along fine with teammates or maybe i look too much into jozy’s twitter feed).
i think the two arguments are very connected.
this is probably the most speculative thing anyone has ever wrote outside of football tabloids and i’m probably way off, but it seems like it could be right from a psychological standpoint.

I have to agree with Unbelievable. SP’s right too, in that Adu’s perception of himself as a player had to be incredibly inflated to think that he’d walk onto the pitch at Benefica and get into the starting 11 or even a regular sub role. But that’s what the U.S. media have told him, what MLS told him, and what the then-Benefica coach told him. Circumstances changed, he wasn’t given the opportunity he was promised, and now he’s told he has to be starting full time at a club to get USMNT minutes. His ego’s still in check enough that he seems to want to make that happen–to make a move to a smaller club and get real time on the field. In what other sport are you a bust at 20? Maybe gymnastics, but not soccer…
Obviously, we’re all speculating. We’re not athletes or psychologists. I have to believe that Unbelievable’s right though–look at Davies. Imagine if Adu had started out with a similar small-market european club. He may not be starting at Benefica today; but he would be getting more time on the USMNT and none of you would be calling out a “kid” who still can’t legally rent a car or buy a beer in the US. He’ll get bigger, stronger, and maybe even play some defense eventually…but there’s no way he’s on the downside of his career at 20.

To be honest i’m not sure where people are getting the notion that anybody is calling Freddy out or saying he’s washed up or anything like that. I simply said maybe he’s not the easiest player to coach and he needs to find a better fit. As we’ve already established, this is speculation, but as I stated in my last post, that’s what message boards/blogs are all about, speculation.
In the end, Freddy needs to move and he needs to move to a team where he can play…period…his growth is being stunted by riding the pine during his prime developmental years.

Cooper with a goal in his first game for 1860…definitely a great start for Kenny.
