Monday News Nuggets

September 22nd, 2008 | By: Brooks Peck | 6 Comments »

-As GS mentioned in the comments over the weekend, neither Freddy Adu nor Jozy Altidore saw action on Sunday. Jozy watched his Villareal teammates beat Numancia 2-1, and increased playing time doesn’t appear to be in his near future as Turkish international Nihat returns from injury (he was back on the bench Sunday, but also didn’t get into the match).

Adu, meanwhile, rode the pine as Monaco ended 0-0 with Marseille. Coming off a goal in his debut, Monaco newboy Park Chu-Young played the full 90 minutes. Perhaps it’s time Freddy continues his revenge on those who usurp him…

-Landon Donovan came up with a hat trick in the Galaxy’s 5-2 drubbing of DC United on Saturday. Mrs. Landycakes celebrates:

-Over at Soccernet, Andrea Canales is keeping those Donovan to Europe rumors alive.

-The good people at TribalFootball are reporting that DaMarcus Beasley is considering hanging up his national team boots. Apparently all the travel is taking its toll on him, as we noticed in the match against Trinidad and Tobago.

Beasley hanging up his boots would be a sad day. He was one of my first favorite American Internationals (granted I didn’t start really paying attention till college).
Maybe he’s sending a message to Big-Bob: “we’re old! get some fresh legs”

I’ve gotta hand it to landy. Bianca is hotter than I realized.
It seems that he is most productive playing right behind a target man. Gordon plays that role for LA, and landon is scoring at will. This is not the way Bobby B uses him, I don’t think, at least not all the time. Am I wrong?

DMB, thanks for your contributions, you’ve been great. I agree it is time for him to move on.

As sad as it may be to see DeMarcus giving up on playing for the national team i’d be lying if I said I wasn’t happy. In his WCQ appearances he has looked very poor. I would definitely believe that the travel is taking a toll but I also wonder if he is there mentally. I wonder if his injury has taken his aggressiveness and timing away. Either way he had a great career for the national team and hopefully he’ll continue to do well for the Rangers.

Now Landycakes is an interesting topic. Kid has amazing skill when he’s performing at his best but he does not always perform at his best. I think he’s weak mentally and that a move to Europe just wouldn’t be in his best interest. He can make decent money living in the states and won’t ever have to deal with being ridiculed. On the other hand, if he actually stops peeing his pants every time he plays in big games he could really do some great things in Europe…but I don’t see him taking off the diaper so I’ll suggest he stays home.

People need to give Landon a break. He went over at age 16 and 19. He was going through a little bit of everything that Freddy, Jozy, and Clint are going through. It was hard for Leverkusen who was one of the stronger German sides to give Landon enough time to get used to playing which is similar to how Benfica and Monaco are using Adu. There were older more experienced players that are easier to call up because you know what you are getting which is how Jozy is getting shunned right now. He also had to deal with different managers and was constantly trying to earn his place like Dempsey is experiencing now. Put any of his doubters in a foreign country and age 16 by themselves and they are gonna have a rough time too. He’s the best player the US has ever had he just got thrown in with the lions to start his career.
