News Nuggets: Extra Tasty

October 27th, 2008 | By: Carter Daly | 15 Comments »

A hearty helping of news nuggets heading your way right now!

-Landon Donovan felt it was necessary to re-re-re-state his desire to move abroad to Europe to play, this time mentioning the English Premiership and La Liga as his destinations of interest. No mention of Bayern Munich for those of you keeping up on that rumor. Bottom line, ‘Cakes is outta here.

-The US U-20 contingent will be heading to Madrid for a training camp lasting from Nov.15-23. The Thomas Rongen lead bunch will include some very intriguing selections such as another Italian Giuseppe (this one looks to be on our side), another Jose Torres, Gregory Garza (of Sporting Lisbon youth fame), and many others. The team will play games against club teams, with dates and opponents to be confirmed. Hooray.

-The NYTimes Goal Blog, headed by journalistic soccer animal Jack Bell, is reporting the nice little tidbit that Jozy Altidore will get his first Villarreal start in the midweek in a fourth-round match in the Copa del Rey against second division side, Polideportivo Ejido. Maybe that long talked about loan move isn’t in the cards after all. All I know is that the last time he started, in a pre-season scrimmage, he notched a hat trick. Just sayin’….

-And last but not least, a little video proof that Clint Dempsey did actually see the field, and score, for Fulham FC over the weekend. Enjoy…

Can Landycakes start for a Premiership squad? discuss.

I’m gonna say, a conditional yes. It has to be a team with decent support though.

BMatthews: I think he can start if he’s given a playmaker role. Landon doesn’t seem to thrive in a system where he can easily get lost. Also, I believe Landon needs creative players around him as he almost always makes great runs and obviously he finishes well around the net. I think he could definitely start in La Liga and for certain clubs in the premiership.

Also, can anybody answer me this…in the video of clint after his goal is he saying, “i’m back, i’m back, i’m back”?? That’s what it looks like to me but I want some confirmation.

There are a few clubs I think that Landy Cakes can start at. He’s versatile so you can either play him on the right wing at the center attacking mid position or as striker. I don’t think he can start at any of the big four clubs regularly, but at a decent Premiership side I think he can if given the opportunity. I also think he can start for some La Liga teams as well.

If Clint Dempsey struggles for games at Fulham, how many premiership teams are going to through a smaller and an unproven in Europe primadona/player like Landy? Not many anyway!

JDunn: sorry dude but that was one of the dumbest posts i’ve read on this blog. You’re comparing clint dempsey to the all-time leading goal soccer in national team history?? I love clint but he is not as talented as landy.

Man I hope he’s back!!! Give the guy a starting role Fulham!!!

Who knows if Landy can play in bigger league… My guess is he would do better in La Liga rather than England… Landy said it himself, he’s not going to take on guys like John Terry and get a positive result… Now if you put him on a club that expects to spread the field and get Landy some balls out in space he’ll run past that pasty whitey brit any day of the week…

Side note… anybody else change the commentary on their Fifia 09 to Mexican Spanish rather than English??? You don’t have to listen to the lame comments that don’t match the game and you get the GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOAAAALLL when you score!!! Plus you feel like you should grow a dirty mustache and change your name to sanchez…

B, how do you switch it. Sometimes I’m in the mood for spanish.

I think teams would be more willing to put Landon out then Clint. Clint is a gamer but he’s the most inconsistent player we have on our national team. What about a move to Valencia. David Villa will likely be gone in January. Manchester City is gonna break the transfer record again for him. Here is my list of possible teams.

Valencia
Deportiva La Coruna
Getafe
Villarreal

Manchester City
West Ham
Tottenham
Fullham

Pseudinho– Here is one way to change the Commentary… http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index?qid=20081016071943AAhqr0z

I found it in the settings under I think My fifa something… but you can always change it right before you start a game in the audio settings…

I’m not sure about places for Landy, but if Hull City called I’d answer… BAND WAGON!!!

And now they aren’t…and I’m an ass.

Either way. If Landon joined Hull I’d seriously reconsider my allegiance to Blackburn (actually, no. But I might buy a Landycakes jersey)

Scoring 4 goals against Cuba and being the big fish in a small pond does not make Donovan automatically better than every other American player. I never said that Dempsey is more talented than Landy, but Donovan looked completely out of his depth for Leverkusen. Dempsey has the attitude and Landy Cakes does not, simple!

And GS, dismissing my comment and calling it dumb while reading into it something that wasn’t there makes your comment the dumbest I’ve read on here.

Comparing Leverkusen Donovan to present Donovan is like comparing apples and oranges. People mature with age, experience, and time.

JDunn: seriously, I hope the only reason you’re still trying to justify your comment is because you’re in love with the EPL and think no MLS player could ever play there because otherwise you make no sense. Clint is a fine player but if you asked anybody in the soccer world who they thought was better, clint or landon, they would probably laugh and say, are you serious?

As others on this blog know I’m a big fan of Clint but come on, no matter what landon’s past results were in europe he is probably the best player to ever put on a USMNT kit and comparing him to clint dempsey just doesn’t make any sense.

He really is trying to sell himself, isn’t he!
Think Spain would be the best bet for him now. He’s been to England. He didn’t like Germany because of the weather and food , apparently! So Spain would seem a perfect fit. Lots of good clubs there that play attractive football and it would suit his style.

Pseudinho- I know I’m late in my response but I just want to clear something up from your comment about Valencia. Villa will not be leaving come January just because money came knocking at his door. This summer Real Madrid was offering 40 million for him and he was not sold. One other thing to mention Valencia is top of the league. Why would he go to Manchester City? Makes no sense at all. Not everyone is Robinho. If Valencia ends a bad note this season, he might leave but as of now, I don’t see taht happening and I don’t see him going to Man City. One other thing, I don’t see Landon flourishing at a team like Valencia.

I think Landon would do in good in La Liga in some of the mid table teams but I don’t think he stands a chance in the top 5 of La Liga.
