Landon played with swine flu

August 13th, 2009 | By: Brooks Peck | 23 Comments »

Landon Donovan told Sports Illustrated’s Grant Wahl tonight that he tested positive for swine flu:

“I haven’t felt that way in a game in a long time,” Donovan said from Los Angeles. “During the game and even after the game I thought maybe it was the altitude, the heat, whatever. But even so I’ve never felt that bad. The last time I was there [at Estadio Azteca] I didn’t feel that bad. I just felt lethargic, slow. I didn’t feel normal.”

Although Landon was playing in the country where swine flu got its start, he says he started feeling the symptoms in Miami the Sunday before leaving for Mexico. Yet, he still played the full 90 and even had an assist on Davies’ goal. Pretty gutsy performance — but you have to wonder if Bob Bradley was aware of this and if so, why he would let Donovan play the entire match in such a condition.

Doesn’t sound like anyone was aware of it til today. Sucks- hope he didn’t make himself worse by playing yesterday.

Best wishes to LD

He’s a real player, plays no matter what he’s feeling…badass.

Brooks, I’m as critical as the next guy regarding Bradley. But it’s been reported in multiple outlets that LD was tested before the game and didn’t know until after the game. Take it easy.

Let’s not forget that the current flu crisis has been categorized as a pandemic. I’m a teacher and as soon as a student shows flu symptoms we send him home and isolated to avoid spreading the virus. Companies ask their employees to stay home too. Donovan is a maginifent player, but how como nobody is saying how irresponsible his behavior was. This strain of flu has killed many people and he didn’t think about risking his teammate health. VERY IRRESPONSIBLE!!!

Pete: I meant upon seeing that Landon was lethargic and fatigued early on in the game. Not necessarily that he had swine flu, per se.

Well shucks man, it did seem like quite the coinky-dink at first… given that he was in swine-flu land. But hey, I’d hate Mexico anyway. Not out of xenophobia, but because they don’t have a single player who’s not a total jackass.

If Lamps or Rio came back from some third world country with some bizarre illness I think you guys over there would get a little curious too.

I think Landon is just making excuses for losing to Mexico. He can’t admit the US got beat by Mexico twice in a row now so he goes off using influenza as an excuse for this most recent loss. Pathetic.

Another quote from the same article:

“I felt something when I got into Miami on Sunday,” Donovan said. “I just felt real bad and finally went to see the doctor. They took a swab from my nose and confirmed it, so that was that.”

The doctors told Donovan that he had the flu while he was in Miami. However, they had to send the sample to a lab to determine if it was H1N1, which is why he only learned that he had swine flu on Thursday. I know this because I got a flu test recently myself

I wonder how much this whole thing will affect the players who made the trip…

ernie, do you read before you comment? landon didn’t know until after the match. plus, you’re going to criticize an american for playing while having H1N1, a mexican player flicked boogers and spat at someone else on the pitch not too long ago. man, why do people make arguments when it can easily be shoved back in their face?

SP: Yes I do read, did you even read what is stated above?….he started feeling the symptoms before the August 12 match…it says it up there if you just scroll up. What Donovan did was irresponsible because he ended up risking the health of both the US and Mexican team players. Now players such as Francisco Torres, Cherundolo and some of the Mexican squad players are under observation by their teams. He kept it secret from the team because he didn’t want to miss this match and probably hindered his team from giving 100% since he wasn’t himself 100%. Yes he did have an assist but he was also half responsible for Mexico’s second goal, since some say the speed he has shown before wasn’t with him to try and keep up with Juarez ( who is not characterized with being a fast player ), could it have been that he was to sick to run at his top speed? Possibly yes.

And the Hector Reynoso incident: Please don’t blow this incident out of proportion. First of all, Club Deportivo Chivas would NEVER have taken Reynoso to Chile if they knew he had H1N1, which he didn’t and does not have because Club Deportivo Chivas actually did a great job of monitoring its players health during the H1N1 scare, I’m not saying the USMNT doesn’t. And secondly: Reynoso PRETENDED to spit and fling boogers at a Chilean player,I don’t think they found spit or a booger on him. And finally: This is a WHOLE different story. The reason Reynoso did this was because he was annoyed and insulted with the way he and his teammates were treated during their stay in Chile. From the get go they were treated as if they had leprosy by Chilean airport officials, fans and players, which is totally uncalled for since it would have been really stupid for a Mexican team to have brought an infected player to another country at the time.
Man why don’t people do a little reading before trying to sound all high-and-mighty?

yeah, donovan did have flulike symptoms before the match, but that is no reason to assume he had swine flu at the time. look at swine flu symptoms, they’re pretty much the same as the common flu, which a lot of athletes have played with (remember MJ in the finals? was he being irresponsible? swine flu isn’t any more contagious). also, i seriously doubt landon had symptoms that he managed to secretly hide from his teammates.

also, first of all, looking at the videos, it def looks like reynoso isn’t pretending and i really doubt that they checked the player in the middle of the match to see if he had boogers on him. also, all of the news outlets reported that he did actually do it.

and lastly, NOTHING justifies spitting and flicking boogers (or even pretending to like you claim) onto someone else during a match (it’s not like landon donovan didn’t get abuse before and during the match).

the only person who messed up in this is bob bradley bc he is the one who had the discretion to take someone out. great players play in huge matches when they feel sick all of the time with the same exact symptoms as LD; donovan was just unfortunate that he ended up having swine flu

Remember that time Michael Jordan put up 36 points in the playoffs while he had the flu? The 90s were sweet.

Hopefully he’s aware that he will catch a shit-storm of grief if his son still gets to start ahead of Jermaine Jones. It’s going to be interesting to see if he replaces Baby Bradley or Clark. Actually, it’s probably Clark since–correct me if I’m wrong–Jones is a more defensive mid?

Clark is a defensive mid, so if Jones starts (he should), Clark will likely be on the bench.

Ray: what’s with the hating on michael? He has been a very solid player for us…one bad game and people are calling him out to be replaced. Just because he’s Bob’s son doesn’t make him responsible for our recent run of bad luck. He didn’t play a great game against Mexico but, in my opinion, he’s definitely the best option right now. Also, as Eagle stated, IF/WHEN Jones is game fit he will replace Clark but I’m not sure Jones will be game fit before the end of qualification…he’s not playing for his club yet and he’s coming off a broken leg…

I would have to agree with you GS, of the two Bradleys Michael is the only one that helps us win games.

Ernie, surely you weren’t serious in you implication that playing Landon is some sort of biological warfare tactic against Mexico…’cause that’s kind of crazy talk.

GS, you’re right. Mostly. My point was essentially that I’m hating 99% of everything Captain Bob does, so I figured the Jones situation would give me more ammo. (I am a fan of M. Bradley, honestly.) And, as everyone’s pointed out so far, Jones and Bradley have different roles and shouldn’t impact each other’s time.

It’s not just that Bob doesn’t make the best moves with the best players available. Sometimes it just feels likes he’s purposefully making horrible moves.
