Mexico Needs Voodoo to Beat the US

January 28th, 2009 | By: Brooks Peck | 6 Comments »

Carter already posted this at Dirty Tackle, but I figured you guys would enjoy this, as well…

The AP reports that a Mexican newspaper has joined forces with Radio Shack (yes, the US electronics store) to start a voodoo campaign against the US MNT ahead of the US vs. Mexico World Cup Qualifying match in a couple weeks:

An advertisement in the sports daily Record on Tuesday invited fans to clip coupons and redeem them at their local Radio Shack store for a voodoo-doll likeness of a U.S. player. The hope was that a little black magic might help Mexico break a decade of futility on the road versus its northern neighbor.

“Help end the losing streak so Mexico advances,” the ad read.

An illustration showed a pair of scissors slicing off the leg of a doll in a U.S. jersey that was bruised, crying out in pain, leaking stuffing, and stuck with pushpins.

How tasteful. Surely this is just a poor joke intended for an adult audience and not a means to corrupt the nation’s youth, though…

“We imagine a group of young people gathered around the TV supporting Mexico and applying punishments to our rivals so that the team can qualify,” Record said in a statement.

Well alrighty then. I underestimated your sleaziness. My apologies.

Obviously, with Mexico having so little success against the US in recent years, a we’ll-try-anything attitude surely isn’t surprising, but why is Radio Shack agreeing to be a part of this? I think this could be a chance for President Barry to show how he deals with treasonous swine (hint: it involves his pimp cane.)

UPDATE: Radio Shack has come to their senses and backed out of the deal.

They should know I’m not laughing with them.

And….We have a sell-out within 90 minutes of them going on sale for the general public. I can’t wait!

I’d boycott Radio Shack if it weren’t for the fact that they’re such a crap store, I wouldn’t shop there in the first place.

Anybody else miss out on getting tickets to the US vs Mexico game?? I went to buy them wednesday night and saw they were sold out… what a total bummer!! I figured they would sell out but not that quick… I’m missing a chance to finally see an important game that is close to where I live… This blows!!!

Mostly I blame Ching and his bloody nose!!!

Haven’t seen the actual ad, Johnny. Maybe someone else can hunt that down and share.

B: It’s always Ching’s fault. See, he even managed to screw up Sasha’s move to Celtic by setting him up for that third goal!

That sucks, B.

I found a couple of presales (information that maybe would have helped….sorry). One was from VISA on Tuesday and one was from the Crew on Monday.
