Pia Declined To Meet The President

According to the Swedish website, SR International, our fearless leader just got a little more fearless as she recently declined an invitation to meet George Bush:

Pia Sundhage might have led the the US women’s team to Gold in the Beijing Olympics, but says she is not interested in going along to meet Bush with other Olympic Gold medallists.

Speaking to Aftonbladet newspaper, Sundhage made it clear that she doesn’t share Bush’ politics and isn’t interested in meeting him.

While not exactly earth shattering news, it is a lovely little eff you gesture that (judging from recent polls) many many Americans, across both party lines, would appreciate. Now that’s the kind of – err – balls it takes to lead our National Team out of scandal and on to Olympic glory. Give this woman a raise! (the article also says she is ready to renew her contract with US Soccer)

That’s probably because Pia wants to vote for that dark sexy, Barack Obama!

Pia – leave the politics at home. If you want the job, play the part. Dope.

Dave, how is it bad for her to politely express her beliefs? She isn’t making a scene and she’s sticking to her guns. Also, she is NOT an American so her teensy little protest isn’t going to be earth shattering.

This woman does deserve a raise! Hell, I wouldn’t want to meet our monkey of a president either, and I’m glad she had the balls to say it!

It just doesnt seem right to me that the US Womans Coach wouldnt meet with the US President. Political beliefs or not, why drag politics into sport?

Dave, I feel ya, but politics & sports have always mixed. Smith, Carlos, Ali. Even Diego Maradona publically offered his support for Hugo Chaves. I’m more worried there isn’t enough politics in sports right now.

Ugh the Maradona thing, even for this Bostero, was unbearable and ignorant. I am the type not to want my entertainers to really share their political views. But its all good. What can ya do.

Yeah, I’m not saying I necessarily agree with Maradona…
