Roundup - 2018 Discussed by Blatter, Benfica Boy Does it Again
Although Sepp Blatter and FIFA made an annoyingly unfair decision to repeal the World Cup rotation system, systematically avoiding CONCACAF’s turn after Brazil took home the 2014 cup as the only candidate, the United States is not giving up its hope to host the 2018 edition of the event the world stops for. Blatter today discussed a possible elimination round to cut down the laundry list of countries battling to host the 2018 Cup. Favorites at the moment include the USA, Canada, Mexico, Russia, China, Belgium/Holland and Spain. Since Sepp Blatter and FIFA seem to be so flimsy with their rules, I propose a rule stating that a country cannot host the World Cup unless it successfully qualifies for its continental/confederation tournament. That means you England. Just kidding, but if you are going to make such a hard run at it, at least fix the Wembley pitch would ya?
One player you should see displaying his skill on the 2018 Cup stage (including the 2010, and 2014 prior) is the Benfica boy Freddy Adu. He did it again this week, scoring his second league goal, fifth overall, against Academica de Coimbra on Saturday, playing 28 minutes in a 3-1 victory for Benfica. I don’t think many people, even the Freddy optimists, thought he would have five goals before December. Can you name another transfer priced at 2 million that has been as impressive? Benfica supporters are starting to feel the Freddy hype that took over the United States a few short years ago, except this time it’s warranted. The goods are finally being delivered, and it has been worth the wait.

I’ve definitely been surprised by his performances. He’s been an enigma at times. He looked great in the U-20 WC, but calling his performances for RSL pedestrian would probably give them more credit than they deserve. That was a bad team though, and you can’t expect a player like Freddy to light it up without some help.
