USWNT beat Germany 3-2 to win the Algarve Cup

Lauren Cheney was the real winner during this tournament with 4 goals, including one in the final. Against Germany, Carli Lloyd and Abby Wambach scored the first two and for the second time in however many months, the #1 team wiped the floor with the #2 team. Total confidence boost. Even Wambach and Cheney agree:

Abby: A big positive from playing Germany in a final is the experience factor for some of these young kids. I think Lauren Cheney probably had the best tournament I’ve probably seen her play on this team. She’s kind of broken out of her shell and is not just a compliment to me, but she is in fact leading our attack in many ways.

Lauren: This tournament really helped my confidence. We got to play three great matches even before the final and then we got to play Germany in the championship, so what more could you ask for?

Coming up, home games! Mexico on the 28th and 31st (broadcast on FSC and ESPN2 respectively). No idea if the US/Mexico rivalry extends to the women’s side but I’m crossing my fingers for some scratching, hair pulling, man stealing, and general Bad Girls Club behavior.
