USA Argentina friendly set for March 26th
Finally, the long rumored friendly was confirmed today by officials within the U.S. Soccer organization. The Argentina match on March 26th will be the first of a pair of friendlies that the U.S. team will host, with the second being USA v Paraguay which will be played on the 29th in Nashville, TN. The New Meadowlands Stadium will surely sell out or come very close for the Argentina game. Of course my first thoughts are that most of the crowd will be draped in albiceleste colors. It’s tough for the U.S. team to get a true partisan home crowd (as in a crowd that supports the US team) when they host other teams from the Americas. Last August when I watched USA v Brazil, which was played in the same stadium, I’d have thought the game was being played in Rio. I’m not taking anything away from Sam’s Army, some of the most devoted fans anywhere. It’s just the demographics. If “the atomic flea” is coming to town, Giants stadium may as well be la Bombonera for the Argentina game.
As I mentioned in my post US National Team: Questions for 2011, I want to see if the U.S. team has been able to find the right players and tactics to raise their game to the next level. Upcoming friendlies against Chile and Egypt will also be very good tests for the U.S. side, but Argentina will be one of the toughest, if not the toughest, opponents that the U.S. will face in 2011. Paraguay, who made the quarter finals at WC 2010, will be no slouch either. For me, the Argentina game will be a very important for a several reasons. The first is that I am anxious to see if coach Bradley has been able to fix the technical difficulties that the U.S. team has had in the defensive midfield and back four netherworld where play has been unsettled for quite some time. Should Leo Messi play, he is one of best off the ball runners in the game, and he always finds the worst gaps to exploit. I want to see how the U.S. side reacts when this scenario unfolds, and it is a “when” not an”if”. With the Gold Cup right around the corner, I would think that Bradley would put his best team on the field and not one of his myriad “experimental” lineups. The last reason is that Argentina is just oozing talent. Messi, DiMaría, Javier Zanetti, Javier Pastore, etc will be a very entertaining side. It will be interesting to see how Sergio Batista has remade the team post Maradona.

US DRAWS 1-1 AGAINST ARGENTINA

Sorry I have not posted this sooner. I’ve had one of the worst weeks in terms of schoolwork.
Bradley started off the game was a 4-2-3-1 formation that was mostly ineffective. I don’t know why Bradley tries this formation. It has not worked well for us in the past, and Bradley still hasn’t gotten the ... [read more]
Juanderful!
Hopefully Michael will give a more detailed post-game analysis. But to me there are two takeaways from the US draw with Argentina tonight. First, that we are better off with a 4-4-2 than a 4-2-3-1. Second, that the second half of the 2 should be Juan Agudelo.
The first half was like a ... [read more]
Interview with Tony Meola
I had the incredible opportunity to interview international superstar Tony Meola this morning. Meola was one of the few American players to make it over to Europe in the 90s and had starting roles for both the USMNT and MetroStars, among others.
Meola is participating in some events in advance of the Argentina game tomorrow ... [read more]
What To Do About Adu

It’s April 3, 2004, 14 year-old US soccer sensation Freddy Adu is about to make his MLS and professional soccer debut with D.C. United. RFK stadium is sold out, and kids everywhere are wearing his jersey. There’s a certain buzz in the air that wasn’t present in any MLS game before. Soccer analysts were ... [read more]

Is Next, Argentina, Very Nice
I suspect few of you get the reference to old Wendy’s commercial from the ’80s about how their new burger was unlike the drab competition. Unfortunately, our USMNT seems unlikely to be much like Wendy’s in this respect.
Players are in the camp now for upcoming friendlies against Argentina this weekend and Paraguay shortly thereafter. Full roster is online: http://me.lt/9A057. The horrible ... [read more]

Sounders 0:2 Crud
I wasn't worried about this game. That's what I said in my abbreviated preview post. I still wasn't worried about it in the minutes leading up to the second goal. The Sounders had chances most of the night. Good chances. Chances that didn't find their way into the net. (seriously, there's ...

Sorry folks, I've been AFK for the better part of the week, which isn't really a good excuse for my lack of posts (I swear I'll get to the Whitecaps match, I DO!). I'm about to leave for the Crew match so I don't have a lot of time to ...
