Jermaine Jones is now an American

June 12th, 2009 | By: Brooks Peck | 15 Comments »

This is Jermaine Jones. He is 27 years old, he’s a defensive midfielder, he plays for Schalke in the Bundesliga, he has three German national team call ups, and he has just told the German Football Association that he wants to play for the United States.

Admittedly, I don’t know a ton about Mr. Jones, but if someone on YouTube deemed him worthy of an “Eye of the Tiger” compilation video, then he must be pretty awesome.

So how will he fit into Bob’s squad? Well, he’s a defensive midfielder, so Bob automatically loves him like a son. It’ll be interesting to see if his resume automatically gets him playing time or not, but we’ll just have to wait and see on that. In the meantime, here he is in action:

Jones couldn’t break into the Germany A-Team and was understandably frustrated. Unfortunately his lack of technical skill, discipline, intelligence and good manners did not help his case. This is a pretty desperate move, as before he has always insisted that we would never play for the US. (The reason being his father abandoned him and his mother.) Anyway, he is not BAD as he does play for Schalke, but he’s the not the sort of player needed in the Germany setup, so the DFB said goodbye without any hesitation.

Well this was completely out of the blue. Put him in the Gold Cup squad, see what he has.

Judging by Wikipedia and some news articles I didn’t bother to translate, he does seem like kind of a jerk. Or maybe that’s just toughness that we used to have with Onyewu? I agree, put him in the Gold Cup and let’s see.

eric- the difference though is that a YOUNG gooch had problems. jones is 27 so you figure how he is now is how he’s always going to be. this is going to be a huge question mark and i hope it works out, but i have serious doubts.

*FOOTBALL MANAGER SCOUTING UPDATE*
ok so apparently he’s a defensive beast and a great tackler but his passing and attacking skills are pretty bad so definitely not a box-to-box guy like bradley can be. he’s an athletic specimen with great pace. also has maximum work rate, determination, and bravery.

This poses a lot of interesting questions I think. First of all, can he fit in quickly to this world cup cycle? He will not be able to play in the Gold Cup, so he will have to get up to speed during qualifiers and friendlies. Also, what does this do to Edu? I think Edu is very good and would be our first choice CDM. Should he be a CB for the national team, maybe?

Wikipedia says that he won’t be allowed to play in the Gold or Confederations Cup.

Interesting twist. I do like the idea of an experienced DM back there.

It’s not on the Wikipedia page anymore, so can anyone confirm or disprove this?

With the new rule, I would imagine some phone calls are being placed to Edgar Castillo. Doesn’t seem like Jones fills much of a need although it effectively takes Pablo Mastroeni out of the pool so there’s that. A natural LB like Castillo would be a big deal. We’ll see.

That goal was amazing. Back heel, chested down to back pass, shot through two players into the corner. Just an all around beautiful piece of Football right there.

He can’t play because the rule only takes effect on August 2.

Confederations Cup News: Fabio Cannavaro is out for the game against the US. His backup, Legrottaglie, is also in doubt. Good news considering that Italy’s central defenders looked real shaky against New Zealand.

Yeah I have heard about the Castillo possibility – let’s cap him ASAP in injury time of a qualifier just to seal the deal. Then, when the drunk hangover wears off, I’ll let u handle the “so what just happened, yeah, um” conversation. But seriously competition and depth a left back would be nice, although I am not entirely against Bornstein
