Soumare Can’t Wait for USA Anymore, Set to Accept Mali Invite

November 4th, 2008 | By: Carter Daly | 13 Comments »

The USA lost another opportunity to have a highly touted, duel-nationality, youngster come and play for Stars n’ Stripes.

But don’t go cursing the USSF and Bob Bradley just yet.

That player was Bakary Soumare, a Mali-American 22 year old center back who plays for the Chicago Fire in the MLS. Soumare has had a rapid ascendance to become one of the league’s best defenders.

Soumare had previously said he would like to play for the USA and Bob Bradley, but today he proved that just couldn’t wait anymore.

The problem with Soumare’s national team career rests with his American citizenship, which he has just recently learned will take him two more years to achieve. With this harsh realization came an offer from his native Mali which was too much to refuse. Read more about it here at Soccer By Ives.

While having Soumare be an up and coming center half for the USA, there is nothing to get mad at here. He wasn’t eligible to be called in due to his citizenship, and you can’t expect one of the most talented players in MLS to simply wait around for two more years before he starts his national team career. Bob Bradley shouldn’t feel this loss at all with a fairly stacked backline as it stands now.

Or everyone can write a letter to Bob Bradley saying that this was the last straw! And if Neven Subotic is not capped in the next half-hour we are all going to support Moldova!

It’s really not a big deal…he’s not even from the U.S. anyway,I think capping him and Subotic defeats the purpose of the team being the U.S. National Team. (though Freddy Adu is an exception)

The German National Team’s best player is Polish.

Couple of them are, actually. Both Podolski and Klose, right Marlon?

Why do we always get on the topic of Podolski and Klose when we talk about representing a country…who would you rather play for, germany or poland?

You’re good enough to start/come off the bench in the world cup/euro cup.

i think i would play for the country where i developed my soccer skills so in that sense i agree with klose for germany, but not podolski or any of the non-brazilian brazilians.

I don’t really judge either player particularly harshly for playing for Germany. I was just saying how it’s just part of football. I don’t think we’re missing a whole lot with Soumare and we might actually get Subotic. This doesn’t seem worth getting upset over.

How come Carter is only updating here and Brooks is only updating Dirty Tackle?

Who was the commenter of October?

Well, you’re just full of questions, aren’t you Marlon?

We’re still working out a balance between here and Dirty Tackle, so I wouldn’t read too much into who’s doing what and where at the moment.

An announcement on the Commenter of the Month for October will be made soon…
