Adu to Benfica, Finally.

Freddy Adu is travelling to Portugal to finalize his transfer to S.L. Benfica. Finally.

Adu is set to become an Eagle for $550,000/yr for 5 years plus housing, car, and goal bonuses.

His base salary is just about what he is currentley making in the MLS, this tells me that money is deffinatley not the driving force behind this deal. I think this is the right deal for Freddy, and have no worries that he and his people covered all of the legistics such as playing time and what not to ensure Freddy continue his development.

He is going to one of the biggest clubs in the world and has a chance to truly shine on the world’s stage and I think with time he will.

The only question mark I have on the deal is why it is for five years. On one hand I guess it shows that Benfica really have a commitment to the kid and this is not just an experiment. On the other I was hoping for Freddy to have a little shorter stint here, then, after hopefully impressing, moving on to somewhere bigger on the European scale. But let’s not get ahead of ourselves.

————————————————————————————–

I know I am a little slow to write on this, but the second most interesting “yanks abroad” type story this weekend is that Landon Donovan eventually wants to pursue a move to the Premiership. At the moment though, Landy is enjoying the Becks mania and plans on enjoying it for a bit longer, but he was quoted as saying as time goes on he wants to put himself at a higher level of play.

This is music to the ears of many Landy doubters, and I for one agree that this sounds great comming from him. As more and more players continue to move to bigger challenges in other places such as Adu and hopefully Landon, I think the US National Team will reap huge benefits from this in the upcomming world cups. The more I think about it the more talented I feel our 2010 squad will be and I truly feel that they will be able to challenge and push the envelope.

re: “shorter stint” The deal would have to be for 5 years, as it would take 2-3 seasons at Benfica for them to bring him up his value and still have 2-3 years remaining on his contact, thus profiting from his transfer fee. If deal was for less, teams could just wait a year or less and take him on free transfer.

Why does Beckham get so much credit when his team stinks and he never plays? Maybe because he is Mr. Spice Girl. MSL won’t make it if they are relying on him. Maybe MSL teams should sign up the other spice girls.

I must agree with Slip. I think he is right on target with his comments about Beckham Spice. I also agree with his feelings about MSL being doomed to the world of indoor lacrosse. Maybe they should sign up Pele. Good call Slip!

Slip and his friends/other aliases? should learn the name of the league that they keep mocking. Just a thought.
