Checking In; Tidbits for the American Fan
It’s been a while since my last post so I thought I’d check in and go over what’s been going on for the past two weeks. To be honest…not much. The next game isn’t until June 2 (against China in San Jose) and as such we won’t see any camp action until mid-late May (another month at least for the next MNT roster folks, sorry). A few things have occurred though, and are of interest.
• US Soccer has a YouTube channel! Following Chelsea F.C.’s brilliant move, the American national squad are now on the world wide video vault (great news for me). You can visit them at http://www.youtube.com/ussoccerdotcom. Notice the “dotcom” addition to the name. I thought this was curious, so I typed in youtube.com/ussoccer to see what I’d find. It looks like a 22-year-old snatched it up in May of 2006 (and has only watched 34 videos since then….). Apparently US Soccer couldn’t muscle their way into taking over his/her account. Anyway, you can now find US Soccer on YouTube.
• The US WNT (haven’t ever talked about them before) clobbered Mexico 5-0 Saturday in Boston. Almost half the team scored a goal…
• Oh, uh, more Zidane transfer roomers are popping up. Go read the article on Laurie’s LA Galaxy Blog. It looks like more and more European newspapers are reporting Zidane is coming to the US (does anyone in Europe even know what MLS stands for; has anyone ever watched a game?)
• The MLS season is alive and kicking. Oh, and have you heard their new anthem? I like it. (I tried to find a sample of the anthem on the MLS site, but it said my search resulted in an “error” and told me to “resubmit my query,” which I did several times and still got an error.) Check out the Offside’s compilation of MLS articles for the soccer crazy fan. It’s rather handy, in my humble opinion.
I’ll let you know more news as it happens. However, before I go, let me leave you with the big (and small) US Soccer questions that we’re going to be asking this month and next:
1) When are we going to see Sunil Gulati remove the “interim” tag from Bob Bradley’s name? If Gulati selects a different coach we’re all going to hate him…again. Oh and Eric Wynalda might go and tell him too to suck his **** (although apparently he’ll have to wait in line with Jim Rome).
2) Will the US wear their blue jerseys or their white ones when they play China? (hmm, that’ll keep me up all night)
3) Just who is that 22-year-old person that stole the US Soccer YouTube name and forced them to settle for /ussoccerdotcom?
4) Lastly, who are we going to see head up to NorCal to take on China in June?

This question is not pertaining to anything but I cannot find the answer.
does nayone know what happened to John O’Brien? Did he retire, go back to the Neatherlands, or did he go to the reserves?

Hi Dave,
Here’s a Wikipedia article on John O’Brien:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_O%27Brien_%28soccer%29
According to this article, he suffered in injury during the second half of the Czech Republic v. USA game in the 2006 World Cup which kept him out of the rest of the 2006 Chivas season. It also says that he was released by Chivas following that 2006 season. He was apparently invited to train for the 2007 season with Chivas, but I don’t know what came of that.

Here’s the starting eleven I’d like to see for china and copa: howard, boca, conrad, spector, dempsey, felhaber, bradley, beas, landy, ej and cooper. We’re pretty solid at the back and should be up the wings if we can get consistent. Up the middle bradley and felhaber have me excited, but I’m more than concerned about our forward pool. Anyone else?

What a great site! It makes me pumped about US soccer by just reading it.
Anyways, I have a soccer blog I’m trying to get people interested in. It has received positive response so far.
You can find it at http://jmayers.blogspot.com
Thanks and take care. Keep up the good work!

For some reason I was reluctant to say this for a long time, but I have to admit that Taylor Twellman really should be getting real playing time for the USMNT. I have no idea how well he could do against truly top-notch defending, but he does consistently score. His goals are seldom spectacular but they happen pretty regularly, and until (oh, glorious day) the US is capable of offense like Man U is displaying at the moment, we’re going to need somebody who knows how to poke in half-chances.

Jon E. I agree with you. He should be playing. Wink, I like you’re starting line-up. I’m excited about Bradley and Felhaber too. Thanks for the post Joshua, I’ll check out your blog.

Bradley as the coach? What a joke. The rest of the world is laughing at us. A look at the 3-0 games shows that his team’s play is very bad. They never switch the ball — just going down the center. He would not be able to coach at the div 1 level in the Premier League. And having his son on the field is embarsing at the extreme. He looks ok cause no one will pass him the ball. How can anyone put a second fiddle player that cannot even make a good team. Bradley is an embarrassment to US soccer. I bet the rest of the world is laughing. There is no way to say he is qualified. We need a real coach that has coached at the world level. Beating joke teams to go 3-0 is well a big whatever. …. A European coach that had his son play for him would be shoot. john cook
