Don’t Focus on the Bad

Copa America is done, with nothing to show for it.
Really nothing. Charlie Davies sorta kinda impressed me for a bit tonight, but I just haven’t seen enough. No young guys really stepped up. That is most dissapointing. No one even really impressed at this “tryout” of ours. Only two goals were scored. All a downer. The first stain to Bob Bradley’s resume has been applied, let’s see what happens from here.
But this is all crappy history in the US Soccer history books. We must focus on the good; the real youth movement is going on in Canada.
Tommorow the US U-20 squad will come face to face with probably the most intimidating national team on any level: Brazil.
What is more intriguing then just the name are the implications.
First off, it is a pretty vital game for our boys chance of advancing, all though they are currently in the driver’s seat.
What personally gets me excited the most is the amount of attention on the game from scouts from the biggest football clubs in the world.
Brazilian forward Alexandre Pato is currently being chased by Chelsea and AC Milan and is one of the hottest youth products on the market. On the other attacking end is the roller coaster that is Freddy Adu. Right now he is at the peak of all peaks and his confidence is off the charts. Imagine if he were to outduel Pato on the grand stage. Just take a minute to consider the implications. It has been said for many years that the US needs an attacker at a big club in Europe to get behind and stir up interest…this, finally, could be your man, again.
Not only Adu has been impressing. How about Danny Szetela, set up machine Sal Zizzo, GK Chris Seitz, and CB Nate Sturgis. The future devlopments of these kids soccer lives could be absolutley amazing. The pure development some of these young stars could experience if they make it to the true big leagues would be tremendous. Think of the effect on the future of the national team.
We can only hope one day to see them finishing chances at Copa America.

What your opinion on CONMEBOL’s complaints that the U.S.A. didn’t send it’s best team (or even a team that could compete) to the Copa America?
After all, Costa Rica’s MNT was eager to participate (and would have sent a full team) but was prevented by the U.S.’s late entrance…

I think you can get rid of those “what ifs”. Adu was superior to Pato in every imaginable way (and not just Adu, either).
If Adu is NOT invited to play in Europe when this is over, then there’s simply an anti-American bias at work. Period. He’s been scintillating.

I think CONMEBOL’s complaints are completely justified. This tournament was a big deal in South America and the US should have considered it an honor to be invited. First they turn it down, Costa Rica gets excited about it, and then they turn a 180 and bump Costa Rica off the list… Only to send an unproven squad that had no business being in any tournament. I understand that it was a great opportunity to get a young team some experience, but save it for a friendly. The US showed absolutely no respect for CONMEBOL, Venezuela, Costa Rica, or any of the other teams competing.
Even the fact that we couldn’t catch the games on anything but GolTV or Fox Sports Espana - Sky Sports in Europe covered the games more thoroughly than the United States. What kind of support for a national team is that?
