Down To 23rd

We’ve plummeted to 23rd in the latest FIFA World Rankings.
After tasting the dizzy heights of fourth place earlier this year we are now playing catch up to 22nd ranked Guinea. With no fixtures on the horizon and no one steering the ship (Jurgen's sunning himself) this could get even worse in the coming months. Steel yourself.

This is a blessing in disguise. We need to be more realistic, instead of seeing articles about #4 rankings (at least most of those had disclaimers about it, which was a start!) and how pleased we are with the Red Bulls getting beat only 4-1 by Barca. The revised FIFA ranking procedure helps, but in any case it represents progress if US fans can see American soccer as others see it. Low rankings ought to spur US soccer to get the blinkers off and try harder.

Anyone that puts faith into FIFA rankings is fooling themselves.

Procedure change nothwithstanding, the FIFA rankings remain nearly as odd as ever. We probably should be somewhere around 23rd, but I think that’s mostly the stopped clock being right twice a day.
