Rumor is Nowak to Coach Young Olympians

According to the Soccer Insider himself Steven Goff, Peter Nowak may be coaching the Stars and Stripe’s young Americans in the 2008 Olympics in Bejing..

The Olympics is a primarily U-23 competition, but each team is allowed to field three players over the age of 23, like possibly ‘Dinho for the Samba Boys.

This is going to be a very intriguing and cool squad to watch for the United States. Players from this past U-20 group such as Adu, Jozy, and Seitz as well as some youngsters who have already seen some senior time (but not nearly enough) in Lee Nguyen and Charlie Davies. It will be very interesting to see who the over 23 players are, but there is alot of time before that.

If Nowak is indeed the coach, one of the top storylines will be his working relationship with Adu. If you remember, Adu and Nowak were never on the same page in DC, and ended on a very sour note when the (in my opinion) power hungry Nowak subbed out the night’s most dangerous player in Adu out of United’s last playoff game. Minutes later they were knocked out. Nowak played Adu out of his natural position for his entire stint in DC, and this frusterated Freddy greatly. The two never worked well together and there always seemed to be some tension.

Nowak has seemed like a great guy in his time with Bradley as an assistant on the senior team. All the players love him, they always joke with him, and he seems really personable. I hope the case is the same for this squad if he does end up the coach.
